Teething at 3 months- is it possible?

My DD2 is almost 12 weeks and is showing some of the signs of teething that I remember from DD1 i.e.:

  • red cheeks
  • dribbling
  • chewing anything that passes
  • loose stools (she's BFed but it's even more watery than usual)
  • very irritable

Is it possible that she might be beginning the process at such a young age? I've heard of babies being born with teeth occasionally, but thought in the usual run of things they didn't start to teethe until at least 6mo....

a baby in my antenatal class got a tooth at 3 months

nannyL · 19/12/2007 20:47

yes it is most certainly possible

my first baby charge cut his 1st tooth at 16 weeks

BirthdayBabe · 19/12/2007 20:48

ohhh yes. dd1 got her first at exactly 12 weeks and I was born with teeth !

pagwatch · 19/12/2007 20:49

my niece was born with two teeth ! Certainly is possible

whomovedmychocolate · 19/12/2007 20:50

Yep, tooth buds showing at 10 weeks here. Bloody nightmare! However DD has got all but two teeth already and she's now only 14 months.

I don't think I know of any babies who waited till six months for their first TBH!

Yep. Another early teether here (12 weeks). The range of normal for first teeth seems to be vast - birth to a year really I think.

pendulum · 19/12/2007 20:59

Wow- thanks! Maybe that explains her foul mood. I'm pretty sure that DD1 was 6-7 months before the first one appeared.

Does that tend to mean the whole process is more drawn out, or do they end up with the full set before other babies do IYSWIM? And doesn't it make BFeeding more difficult/ painful?

I did get a few nips early on as ds adjusted to having teeth but it didn't last long. Lots of tips on the Breast & Bottle Feeding board if you search the archives.

I'm not sure about the timetabling of the other teeth. Ds seemed to get the 8 front ones pretty early compared to other babies we know, but then there was a long gap and he's only got his first two molars in the last month (is 13 months now).

BeeWiseMen · 19/12/2007 21:12

just to cheer you up no end - DD started teething syptoms at 3 months and 3 months later there's still no sign of a tooth. You want to punch me now don;t you ?

Flibbertinseljinglebells · 19/12/2007 21:17

DS1 was 7m before a tooth showed and has only just got his last molar a few weeks before his 3rd birthday. Dentist said its very late but not abnormal.
DS2 was 5.5m with first one but each time one appears they do seem to all come in a set of 4 up down pairs within days of each other.

Rub some gauze on the baby's gums every day and it will toughen them up so it doesn't hurt quite as much when the tooth does cut through. HTH.

ds1 had his first tooth at 4 months so, yes.
Bonjela is good - especially if you keep it in the fridge.
I always find with the biting thing that they only do it when they are tired and not really feeding properly

suzi2 · 20/12/2007 21:45

it's certainly possible, but we swore DS was teething (red cheeks, drooling, chewing anything, grouchy) from about 8 wks and the first tooth finally arrived at.... 10.5 months!

I guess it could have been teething pain with him. But I also think that a lot of babies are drooly and mouthy at that age - worked out that the mouth feels things better than other parts.

Slapped cheek?

takefu · 20/12/2007 23:04

Oh yes, I think my DD started teething quite early- maybe around 4 mos off and on. She got her first tooth at 6 mos though, so it was really off and on for a couple of months. I've actually read that a very tiny percentage of babies are actually born with a tooth... and my HV confirmed it because I didn't believe it. So, it's totally possible.
