20mo telling me his eyes ‘hurt’ in the morning

So my 20mo is a pretty good talker, and he’s learned ‘hurt’ (but he obviously can’t distinguish hurt from being a bit uncomfortable). Most mornings for the past week he’s woke up (sometimes upset) and says ‘eyes…..hurt’ and he’s rubbing his eyes quite a bit.

He’s never had sleep in his eyes (probably as he doesn’t sleep an awful lot ha) but around 6 weeks ago we noticed his eyes had quite a bit of sleep around them but other than that totally normal. This seemed to sort of disappear and has now recently started again. His eyes are lovely and clear, not bloodshot, doesn’t seem to be any issue with sight (points at everything and names it), and he never mentions his eyes apart from in the morning, and in the morning he seems to really really rub them with his arm or against a pillow as if they must be quite irritated (but again no redness).

I’m not sure where to go from here, he’s happy, eating, drinking normally, had a great few days at nursery this week. No temp. It’s just really sad that our day starts with him being upset.

I would take him to get his eyes tested at your local optician

They might be dry? It can be worse at night and when you wake up. You can try increasing the humidity in the room, or eye drops.
