Big head?

Hello my baby was born 5weeks premature due to pre eclampsia and I had to have an emergency c section . She was born with a cyst on her forehead which drs said they would monitor over time. My health visitor is quiet worried about the size of her head, she is on the 75th centile for weight which is normal but her head is on the 98th they are measuring her head every 4weeks and there's an increase from last time. The pediatrition is happy and no concerns but health visitor is worrying me. I'm now worried that the size of her head is something to do with this cyst . To look at her she looks fine and doesn't look like she's got a massive head but she's 6months old and I'm buying her 9-12pm the winter hats which are still small for her . Has anyone had any similar situations and any advice xxx

I can understand the HV worrying you.

When you say that her head is getting bigger each time, is it getting bigger but staying in the same centile?

Yes it remains on the 98th centile but she say it's still increasing on measurements on every measure ?

If it's staying on the centile and the Paediatrician is happy, I'd try to relax.

We come from an area where heads are apparently bigger than the norm, has never been an issue Smile

If it's on the same centile it's no issue. My DS was 50th weight and 90th head and just stayed on them throughout. Not sure why HV is concerned by this.

My daughter is a twin and born premature too. Her head was on 98th percentile and body on 15th (I am small too). I was really worried about this too, but she seems fine now. Can I ask do you, partner and / or other family have larger than average heads

Trust the doctors, if they are not concerned I would take heart from that. Remember health visitors mean well but they are not actually medically trained.

They're Nurses so yes, they are medically trained.

I do agree with you over trusting the Paediatrician over this one though.

They used to be yes but these days they don't have to be nurses.

According to NHS Careerss* you still have to be a Nurse or MW to apply.

Have you got a link that says you don't?

Mattieandmummy · 28/11/2021 16:50

No I don't....and that link definitely suggests they do have to be nurses or similar.

My health visitor told me she wasn't a nurse but used to be a social worker and had gone on a course to change careers so I just assumed the requirements had changed but it looks like that's not the case so no idea how my health visitor became a health visitor.
