Nearly 5 month old can’t keep head up when on tummy

In less than 2 weeks he’ll be 5 months. I see from milestones that he’s supposed to have better control of his head than he does. He’s supposed to be able to keep head up when on tummy and that’s a 4 month milestone. It has improved since birth and there’s been a general improvement in his development (babbling, reaching and grabbing, rolling from back to side). I know milestones are averages and babies develop differently but just wonder at what point do you contact HW?
I give him tummy time and he can raise his head but only for a few seconds. I wonder if I’ve not given him it for long enough and maybe it’s something I’m doing/ not doing)
He does have a big head so I wondered if that makes it more difficult (98 percentile).

More than likely it's because he hasn't had much opportunity to practice. Lack of tummy time etc.

My daughter was similar at 6 months. She wasn't pushing through with her arms for ages after that too. But honestly, I carried her in my arms for the first 3 months and didn't start tummy time until 6 months.

Everything righted itself at 9 months.

As long as he has good head control when he is sitting (by around 6 months) and he hasn't got a head lag at this age then everything sounds fine. Just increase frequency of tummy time through the day and put things in front of him like a mirror or a favourite toy so he has motivation to look and hold his head up xxx

Yeah hopefully he does just need more tummy time. I’m trying to do it more often and for longer during the day. I’ll give it another few weeks and then contact HW if it’s not improving more.
I think one of the issues to supporting himself up with his hands is that he hasn’t worked out he’s to do it. He either lies with his head turned or if he does lift his head, he also tries to turn to one side like he wants to roll over but it’s impossible as his arms are spread out so the arm stops him. I’ve tried to place his arms and encourage him but he does his own thing 😂

There will be exercises that you can do like waving a favourite toy in front of him so he can reach our for it so he is free to roll over. But it's so frustrating and u want to move their hands for them haha.

I saw a paediatrician and told him that she learned how to roll at 6 months because she wasn't seeming to do it by herself and he was a little bit outraged 🤣

He said he had never heard a mum say that before and that I needed to stop doing things like that because if anything I might mask any problems.

He was a bit blunt but to be honest I needed to hear it 😅

Hi Just would like to know how your little one is.
my little one is 8 months old.
can roll over. No head lag. Can sit up independently. But on tummy does lift head only for a short period.
we have not given her much tummy time.
