Does this sound like ASD?

My son is 3.5 years old and started pre school lately. He has delayed speech and language which we are paying privately for sessions. He sees two S & L therapists, one is also a qualified behavioural therapist. We have asked them both their opinion on whether our boy could have autism and they have both said definitely not. Its always been more my husband querying this, I dont feel he has, I have a few friends with children on all levels of the spectrum and I think as a Mum I would just know. Obviously we dont care if he does or not. However he doesnt meet any other 'criteria', apart from lately in the past 6 weeks he had started covering his ears if there is too loud or an annoying noise. But it doesnt distress or bother him. He had a hearing check a few months ago which is being followed up in another few weeks because one ear was quite waxy. He has always been able to hear us.
He is sociable, affectionate, always made eye contact, good imaginative play, responds to name and smiles, no repetitive movements.
However his pre school teacher has suggested he has an ASD assessment because of his speech and language delay. He has experienced a bit of a toileting regression since starting pre school and the teachers are frustrated that he cant communicate fully with them about it.
I have contacted the GP and waiting on him ringing back. I believe there is a long waiting list to get this assessment and we dont mind paying privately.
Just wondered what peoples thoughts were. thanks

My DS does all of those things and is also autistic. If you do seek a private diagnosis then make sure your GP and local services support it as often they don’t, so check first, or they may be able to recommend someone.

My child wasn’t diagnosed until he was at school and was coming home and having meltdowns due to masking all day.

I quite like this explanation.
