Concerns about niece - should I just let it go? *title edited by MNHQ at OP's request*

Hi all

I've been concerned about my DN since she was about 6 months old. She was delivered at 34 weeks as had IUGR and her heart rate was showing signs of distress. She was very small (just over 2lb) and stayed in hospital for about 6 weeks. She's now turning 1 and I think is on 2nd centile for weight and 50th for length.

I talked to my SiL when DN was 9 (7.5 corrected) months and suggested she looked at the 9-12 month check questionnaire as I noticed a few things that concerned me:

  • not rolling
  • not sitting independently
  • what felt to me like stiff muscle tone
  • legs frogging when picked up
  • not picking things up and passing them (though she would grab for things and hold them if you gave it to her)
+ A few more I can't bring to mind now.

She had the review and apparently the health visitor said she was perfect and any delays were just because she was small. Which I though was a bit weird but accepted as I'm not a medical professional.

Now she's just had a review with the Paediatrician at 1 and has come on a bit but still isn't sitting independently, doesn't pull up to stand, doesn't babble or say any 'words'/sounds for things. She has started to commando crawl and the paed said he's not seen a baby crawl before sitting before but that she'll probably be sitting within a month.

There's still just a niggle for me though. As I said, I have no medical background but I have spent the last 5 years surrounded by babies and toddlers and there is just something different to any baby I've seen/held before. I think the main thing which persists is how stiff/tight she feels when you hold him.

So - should I just drop it and let the doctors do their thing as they're the experts or should I say something again to my SiL? She says she has no concerns over her development and any delays are just because she's low weight centile.

As DN is already being seen by a Paediatrician I would personally leave it. You could just be a supportive ear for SIL if she ever wants to talk and offer to babysit if she ever wants a break.

I would drop it .

My oldest son started crawling and sitting in the same week . I thought it was odd too but it happens .
