Worried about DS 10m speech

Looking for some reassurance or ideas of how I can support my DS with his speech.

He is 10m and is not really babbling at all, the only sound he tends to make is "UH" or very, very occasionally he will "ba ba ba" but not daily.

At around 8 months he said "mamama" for about a day and then got very poorly with bronchiolitis and has not said much since.

I talk to him throughout the day and he also sees DD and me chatting away. I spoke to my HV about 2 weeks ago and she said they would be looking for 3 words by the time he is 1. I just can't see this happening at this point.

If I say where is the lion he will reply "uh" if I say do you want a story, its the same "uh" and an excited wiggle.

He makes eye contact, smiles, laughs, waves, has just learnt to point. Doesn't clap yet.

Any advice? Should I take him to the GP?

I think it is a bit soon to be taking your son to the GP about his speech at ten months. My neighbour's grandson didn't say a word until he was over two and is now a big, perfectly normal, chap. He had an older sister who was very chatty, as is their mum; it was almost as if they did the talking for him!

They often learn to say, "No", at that age Smile.

I'm sure he will be fine. Try getting him to sing along to something on the radio. If you do it he might copy you.

My DD didn’t even start babbling until just after she turned 1. She’s 16 months now and says about 10 words, although not often - she’s been working on walking. I find she goes quiet when working on a different skill - is he crawling, pulling to stand, cruising?

‘Uh’ is my DD’s favourite ‘word’ too 😂

WHAT?! I'm very impressed that you've found a HV that has time to worry about a baby not saying 3 words by 12MO Grin Some will be by then but plenty aren't saying a thing until much older. Mine could say one thing at 11MO and didn't massively take off until 18MO and sentences by about 21MO. I'd say if anything she's quite advanced now at age 3.5. She also didn't really babble until almost 12MO. I wouldn't focuss on words but social communication at age 1. Do they imitate clapping/peepo/song actions etc? Do they babble or try and have a conversation? Do they understand a bit of what you say? Do they point? If there isn't plenty of this by 18MO THEN I would look into things a bit. The only thing I'd do right now is get in touch with HV and organise a hearing test as this is something that needs addressing asap if it's a problem. Otherwise I'd just enjoy your baby x
