Food worries

Don't know if this is the correct forum for this however.

My son is nearly 11 months old and doesn't eat much.

Whenever I offer him food by putting it in his highchair (BLW) he just throws it off the tray. He will sr most take a couple of bites and then throw the rest away.

If I spoon feed him, he refuses, turns his head and it's a struggle to get him to eat.

He is gaining weight well and is on track with that but he is approaching 1 and I'm aware that the formula will be stopping or reducing soon and I don't think he eats enough to sustain himself.

He loves water and would rather drink water than eat food.

I see other babies who can have a pile or plate of food on their tray and just make their way through it but this was honestly be impossible for us.

We have tried finger foods, snacks, fruit, veggies, meals but everything just gets tossed.
Any tips ?

How much formula is he getting? At this age it should be 400 mls a day. If he's getting more, that will probably explain why he's not very hungry Smile

@DominicRaabsTravelAgent he takes well over that!

He is take maybe double that per day.

Might try cutting down and see if that helps thats.

Just my HV told me food before one it just for fun and that I should be offering him formula first and then food so naturally he isn't as hungry.

Slightly out of date advice from your HV there. Now it's 400 mls a day between 10 and 12 months with a vitamin tablet to top up.

I'd drop his first bottle tomorrow and go straight to breakfast instead.

I would definitely try and reduce the formula and try offering food before bottles. My daughter is a good thrower how you see a lot less of it when she is actually hungry.

@DominicRaabsTravelAgent we tried that today and pushed him breakfast out till a bit later and he took much more. Also his usual one nap bottle he didn't take it all which he normally does !

Thanks

Have a look at this guide from about page 77 as well. It gives you a good idea of when to give milk and solids and how to offer a range of nutrients.

The food before one thing was because people were dropping milk feeds too quickly but then they realised that some people were taking it quite literally, so the advice changed again Smile

MummaBear333 · 19/09/2021 10:44

@DominicRaabsTravelAgent thanks so much ! That guide is amazingSmile lots of great ideas for food too.

I always feel like I struggle for ideas of what to give my son and wonder if maybe he is bored so that's a good variety.

I will have a go this week and see how it goes

We were having very similar problems. My LG has had no interest in food (she is 11 months / 10 months corrected). She had weighf gain issues and was prescribed high cal formula and was having 800mls a day.... no surprise she wasn't hungry. Dietician asked us the drop the 11am bottle. She has a bottle at 7 and then lunch at 11 and sure enough.... not opens her mouth for the spoon and eats a reasonable amount. Definitely
Try replacing a bottle with food. I think the food for fun is more for the early stages when babies are exploring but I think as approaching 1 it's is time to start encouraging hunger. Milk is very filling. Good luck. I was sure it wouldn't work but it is
