CAMHS referral?

Anyone have any experience with 'official' psychological help? DD2 in brief - school refusal, difficult, anxious, out of control temper, impossible to live with! (also sweet, loving, bright and adorable)
Am seriously considering getting the doc to refer us to CAMHS as i'm utterly stumped by all this and cannot try any more to make her happy

So what would it entail? would a referral forever label DD2 as disturbed/insane/difficult? How long would it take to come through? etc etc. are there any other options? am very sad this morning.

My dd was referred when she was 4 as she had difficulty with anxiety and would refuse to go to the loo. It was brought on by stress when her dad was ill. The psychologist visited a couple of times, just talked to us, gave suggestions and advice. She's just been referred back by the HV as she's again struggling with anxiety now that she's at school.

I don't feel that my dd is labelled at all, she needs a bit of help, and i'm fully willing to admit that i don't know the best way to do that, so someone who is a professional will hopefully be able to tell me what would make things easier for her. I don't have to take all the advice, if it's not helpful i'm in control of how much imput there is. Last time it was very useful for me to just have someone else's opinion and some suggestions and someone to talk it all through with and be reassured that she'll be ok.

a self referral could take anything up to 9 months or so to actually get to see someone anyway. DD would not have be labeled, its society that labels them not Drs and spoecialists, If they felt she had a dioagnostic condition it may actually help you to find suitable treatment and make both you and more importantly your dd lives a lot more enjoyable. If you are felling like you have done all you can then go for it, what harm can it asking for help. I know I feel like that sometimes!

You can get a referral through the Hv or dr though, and they try to get in touch within 4-6 weeks. We were seen really quickly last time. It's really not as bad as you think, it's just someone who will talk through her behaviour and what the issues are, and try to give you some help with it. go for it, it may be a very temporary thing anyway, try to not to get hung up on the stigma etc, if you need some help then it's a good idea to ask for it. Good luck.

Hi,

My DD (she has Apergers) sees a child psychologist at a child development clinic, she also had an educational psycologist how come in to work with her at school.

like the others have said it can take a while to get an apointment to see a child psycologist it would probably be quicker for school to get the Ed psyc to see her.

I have not experiance of CAMHS as luckily we have a child dev clinic locally, however there are lots of mums here that have, i think it would be a good idea to maybe post this on the special needs board to.
