5.5 year old still in night time nappies

Hello everyone.
I'm really desperate for some advice.
My 5.5 year old son still wears nappy pants at night. He does loads of wees overnight but never wakes up. The nappy is sometimes so full in the morning that it leaks out and the bed is wet. All the guidance/advice I've read seems to suggest I should just wait until the nappy is drier in the mornings to try and stop using one, as there is some kind of hormone he needs to develop which will allow him to go longer (overnight?) Without needing a wee and/or he will learn to wake up when needs a wee at night. But I'm worried that I'm just letting the whole thing go for too long, as he will be 6 in January. Is there anything I can try or will I just end up with a soaking bed early in the night? I did speak with a Health Visitor about this but she wasn't very helpful as just told me to wait. I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone else who is experiencing something similar.

First thing you need to do is to speak to the GP. Unless he's producing the hormone to sufficient levels, anything you try will be futile.

Honestly I think GP won't be too concerned at this age and certainly won't want to give medication. Have you looked at the ERIC website for tips? I wouldn't stress too much though it'll probably come in time xx

Hi my DS was like this too- incredibly common but unless other people tell you it just isn't often talked about!

Yes I have looked through all the information on the Eric website and it is very helpful. Apparently the guidance has now changed on the age at which children should be referred to a health professional. It used to be age 7 but now it is from age 5 so we are in that bracket now.

My dd (6 in jan) is in them too and I know of a few others. She tends to hold it in and then wees at night when relaxed. We use size 7 pampers pants. Eric are a helpful source of info and know more about this than the gp. Also it’s worth calling the school nurse as they can give advice and then refer you to the continence team if things don’t improve.

Hello

My son is exactly the same he is still in nappy pants at night I wasn’t sure what route to go down with this either! Maybe it is more common then we think

My middle son had issues with night time bedwetting despite potty training him aged 3. He was in night pull ups until age 7, almost 8. He is 9 now and thankfully been dry for about a year. I am still very careful about drinks an hour or so before bed as he struggles to wake up for the toilet.

With DS, very frequently he also had a small wet patch on his trousers during the day as it just didn't occur to him that he needs a wee. It was very frustrating. Even now I have to sometimes remind him to go. When we travel he is always the one that will need the toilet on the way! I've come to the conclusion he simply has a weak bladder as well as lazy about going to the toilet.

Your DS will grow out of it too as most kids do, I wouldn't worry.
