8 year old constantly losing things, not taking care of belongings

Good evening. Looking for a bit of advice on my lovely 8 year old boy. He is clever, caring, kind and has the energy of a Duracell bunny, always on the go! He has always been bad at losing/forgetting things and I just put it down to age previously but I'm definitely noticing a difference between him and his peers/my friends kids of similar ages. Every day at school pick up he's forgotten either his jumper, lunchbox, water bottle, and seems to have no recollection where these items are. Even things that are really precious to him, he misplaces and gets upset when we can't find them. I make sure all bits going to school are named so most comes back eventually but It was his birthday last week and we had gotten him these Manchester United shin pads he had been asking for, couple of days later he wore them to play football with a friend at the park, and he had taken them off for some reason and left them by the goal ( I hadn't realised!) he only realised a few days later when he had football training and said he had left them by the goal in the park and obviously they were long gone by the time I went to check and he is devastated. Wondering if other people with children of similar ages are the same? Or if you have any tips? He even does it at home for example with the tv remote, he will put it somewhere then have no idea where he's put it, and we have to turn the house upside down looking for it! X

Do you model putting things in the same place? Eg 'look, I always put my keys on this hook when I come in, so I always know where they are'. Ditto the remote.

Maybe as term progresses you can ask the class teacher if he seems a lot worse than his peers. I can understand the shin pads thing - all too exciting playing out with a friend to remember stuff. DS1 was a bit like this though it seems to have improved at secondary (though I have recently bought a job lot of protractors and spare compasses ...)

I have ADHD and the description of your son sounds like me. I lose things all the time, struggle to keep things organised, follow through with tasks etc. and I’m an adult. He could also just be 8 and need some support on how to do it as well.
