Writing backwards?

DD is 3.8.

She has started writing her own name which is great. She's interested in letters and can recognise them and also talk about what starts with S, B etc etc.

This afternoon she asked me how to spell 3 of her friends names. So told her the letter and she wrote it down. When I went to look at her work I saw that every letter was written perfectly but backwards.

Is this common?

I think this a phase they go through. DS learnt to write his name last Spring and instantly started experimenting with writing backwards, mirror writing and bubble writing. His friend who is 2 days younger did the same thing except the bubble writing.

DD does this - is left-handed too.

DS and his friend are right handed.

Thanks. Actually I think it was mirror writing.

She is definitely right handed.

I used to do this, and still can, and I am ambidextrous.

I am right handed and if I try to write with left hand, my writting is much neater if I write backward (mirror). I think it makes sense that she could be ambidextrous.

When you read to her, try pointing at the letters so that she is often reminded that you read from left to right, same with writting.

dd is left handed (aged 4.11) and often writes perfect mirror writing.
If I make sure she starts to write at the left side of the page, she gets it correct, though.
Mind you I've also seen her colouring in with a pencil in both hands
