3 month old grabbing with one hand more than the other

First-time poster here. I've gotten myself into a spiral of anxiety over my 3-month-old girl. She's just started to grab a few days ago but so far is only really doing so with her right hand. She sucks her left, can brings both together and feels things with both but only really swipes at hanging things half-heatedly with the left.

She was born by emergency c but seems healthy in all other respects.

Has anyone else experienced this sort of (albeit very early) hand dominance and what was the outcome? Did they eventually balance out?

My mind instantly fixes onto the worry that it's caused by some degree of cerebral palsy.

That sounds perfectly normal. You might find if she starts to do more things she may use her other hand more.

Have you been suffering with a lot of anxiety since she was born?

Don't worry. It's perfectly typical as the previous poster said. They often start a new skill with one hand and then move onto the other. If your baby truly had emerging hemiplegia she would likely not use the other hand at all, would keep it fisted or tucked up against her chest. My 9 month old is under neurology and these are all the things our consultant was checking for.

Both my sons have favoured one side before moving onto the other. Try not to worry. Post natal anxiety is the pits though and you have all my sympathy.

Oh by the way at three months she likely is keeping her hands fisted some of the time and that too is normal!

Thanks guys. Kind of you to reply and does put my mind at ease. Yes, I'm starting to realise the post natal anxiety might be a bit of an issue and am going to speak to the GP.

It does sound as if you might benefit from some counselling. Have you spoken to the PANDAS Foundation? They can be very helpful Thanks

I read this thread when my baby was around 3 months with the same concerns..

The 'preference' lasted around 2 months but now he uses both hands equally. Just wanted to reassure whoever is reading this that more often than not this is a completely normal stage of development..
