I took him today (the 2nd time in 2 weeks) prepeared him all morning, bribed him ... but as soon as he was put in that chair he screamed.

So i left again red face and with a child who is starting to resemble a wookie

I get home and I have to cut his hair, every hair cut he has ever had in his short little life has been by me ... and diabloical to bpot.

And yet again each family member will make a sarky comment about his 'home haircuts'.

But would they rather me give him 2 doses of calpol and hold him down screaming whilst the barber does it?!?

It'll look OK (ish) in a bout a week.

Luckily its winter ... and he has alot of hats

Yes, although sh is nearly three and the last two times she has merely sulked rather than cried and screamed. The hairdresser has managed to cut her hair each time and amazingly straight considering her head didn't stop moving.

I have to admit that we resorted to giving DS1 a lolly before he got in the chair instead of waiting for the hairdresser to give him one afterwards and it worked. We had to do it everytime for at least a year but it was better than crying and wriggling.

You don't have to give him a lolly but something that will distract him whilst not encouraging him to move around will work. Just don't make him wait until after the haircut to get him to be a good boy but give it to him the moment he gets in the chair.

Maybe get the hairdresser to put the clippers on him on the longest setting as it is quick and not that short.

My nephew is the same. Has had a few cuts started but not finished. Last time I saw him he had a mullet!

Hi my ds is 3 and he has never been to a hairdresser. I just know he would not take it.
I cut his hair myself, luckily I am good at it.

HonoriaGlossop · 29/11/2007 18:00

lol at your nephew's style statement buda!

DS had me do his hair (FAST) for ages, he's five now but would still rather not go to the hairdresser. I've just let him have it long.

Long is very 'now' for boys you know

Actually we were in the hairdresser once when a deeply distressed child was having his haircut. I've had a very tantrummy boy, and worked with kids for years, and I have NEVER heard distress like it. I was appalled the parents and hairdresser carried on TBH. It's not that important!

We had 3 visits to hairdresser's with ds1 (3 yr old)- first just look in window and all hell broke loose, second time we stepped inside and all hell broke loose. Third time we got on the chair and all hell brooke lose. No amount of lolly or bribery worked. He'd rather go to the dentist. I gave up and now cut his hair myself, but ds1 specified it has to be scissors, not clippers. So it's a bit patchy but it's not that difficult and if he doesn't like it he can go to the HAIRDRESSER'S!

hannahjb · 30/11/2007 10:23

My DS (4 in feb) hated the hairdressers, about 1 out of 3 times he would sit still and we managed to get a hair cut out of him and when we went back, screamed blue murder until we left, with no hair cut. I have now discovered that although he is not yet 4, he is sexist and will sit like a saint if a bloke is cutting his hair!!!!!! He must get it from his Father!!!!!

Find a hairdresser willing to do pram cuts (quite easy when your child is asleep or to tolerate the screaming and just get on with it. There will be someone out there if you look .

I presume you've tried chocolate?

admylin · 30/11/2007 10:57

Ds was scared of the scissors when we took him the first time and he screamed so we gave up and he had lovely thick long hair 'til he was 5 when he decided to swap his locks for a bionicle (bribe, was grans idea)
