Baby just started playing with words. On her own, not interactive with me. And she won't copy me with actions or sounds. She either smiles or disengaged.

Did anyone else have this?

That's really typical. My understanding is the only gesture they really expect at this age is reaching their arms to be lifted when you reach down to pick them up. Copying banging a block on a table should come by 10 months ish. Imitating sounds is a 12 month milestone.

My 8 month old is the same as yours. My older DS was too and he is a highly verbal and social 3 year old now. Don't worry yet x

Thank you so much for this. So your babies just babble away happily to themselves? No turn taking or any sort of conversation between you?

She doesn't really reach her arms up to be picked up to be honest though. She let's me know she wants to be picked up by lifting her bum up off the floor as in making a bridge. Which communicates her needs, but not in the typical way. I've been reaching my arms out to her to try to teach her but still nothing.

I'm so anxious this week! I cant get a hold of myself xxx

I'm so sorry you're struggling. I had horrific post natal anxiety with my first DS and spent the first year convinced he had autism. He doesn't. He also had no red flags for it other than being a bit slow with name response and a bit slower to babble communicatively. My second DS is identical so far.

In terms of exchanging sounds if my baby shrieks and I copy him then he will shriek again and we can go back and forth a few times. He certainly doesn't copy babble sounds. He babbles only to himself at the moment and more so when he's tired or over stimulated. His babble is also pretty limited as he's been working on his gross motor. My first DS was the same.

When I reach down to pick up DS2 he will sort of lift his arms up but more to reach for my hands if you see what I mean. Arms straight up in the air to be lifted will probably come in the next few months and unprompted probably even later.

Your lo sounds great 🥰

Same as my 8 m/o DS... doesn't copy or exchange sounds with us yet. It's not something I thought to be concerned about.

No not yet! If we copy a sound he makes he just looks at us and smiles! I'm sure it will come soon :)

Bombleton · 31/07/2021 11:02

Thank you...I hope so...my eldest is autistic and so part of me doesn't know what's normal for what age and part of me is looking out for any and all signs xx

Hi @Bombleton can you please update?

Bombleton · 06/07/2022 07:47

She is 19 months. Biggest copy cat going. If her brother jumps, she tries to jump, if someone says bye, she waves and says bye.

Loads of words now. Unclear, but I can understand them. So she says tow-ter for downstairs kind of thing or sh-sh for horsey.

Very interactive and communicative. No concerns now xxx
