Delayed visual development

Hi all..my DS has been diagnosed with delayed visual development.Basically the opthamologist looked into his eyes and can't see anything wrong with his eyes.He also believes his optic nerve looks fine but DS cannot see much.So he has asked to just wait and give it a few months for his vision to develop. He did not suggest a brain MRI or any such tests for now and I am worried if a diagnosis without the brain MRI is just the consultant giving us hope for the next few months..
I am so devastated. I want to be hopeful for now but in general I am a very anxious person and finding it very difficult to be positive.
Could anyone tell me about their experiences with delayed visual maturation please?

What age is he?

Hi..my DS is 10 weeks old.He does not fix and track objects. He doesn't react when we dangle toys in front of him.Although many times we have felt that he looks at our face but now I wonder if its just a coincidence :(

The fact that his optic nerve looks ok is good news.

Was it the Consultant that you saw?

Hi there..yes we had a private appointment with a consultant. We have a 6 week wait on the NHS and decided we couldn't wait for so long,so went private.
The consultant dilated DSs eyes and had a look at the back of his eye. He then said everything looks fine but DS can't see much ,some babies have visual delay and this seems to be the case .So he suggested to just stimulate eyesight with light up toys and wait for a few months.
I really hope DS eyesight gets better with time .I want to make sure we do whatever possible to stimulate eyesight and also his development in any other way (sensory ?,rolling over?..no idea what else I need to be think about). So any pointers would be helpful.
Also looking for some reassurance from other parents who have gone through similar situation.
Thank you for listening!

Hi, how is your little one getting on now?

I suspect my 12 week old has dvm. We saw the gp last week and they have sent a referral. Now it’s a waiting game for an appointment. I feel like her vision has improved slightly over the past week, so feeling hopeful that she will have normal vision by 6 months. Just looking online and reading about dvm and other peoples experiences.

Hi,my lil one’s vision is much better but we still have some concerns with vision.
There is a DVM group on FB you can join to read about the journey of many others.
Wish you good luck with everything!

My son has been referred to the ophthalmologist at 10weeks old due to one eye wondering too far in and they picked up that he wasn't tracking or following at all we went for a checkup at 16 weeks and although he's slightly improved he will only track for a second before he loses focus on the person/object and doesn't seem to look at me when he does track it's like he's looking down instead of making eye contact I've been told it's just delayed visual maturation.
Does it eventually correct itself?

underneaththeash · 17/03/2023 15:38

@AJ91 yes, often. We don't refer eyes that turn in before 6 month usually.

Eyes need experience to develop properly, so I'd steer away from slings.

If it's still not tracking at 6 months, you need to go back.

@underneaththeash Thankyou! He's under a paediatric consultant for other health issues so he'll be monitored to see if he's improving
