Thought I would share this with you all.

I read an article in The Mail on Sunday this week and I've chucked it in the recycling bin otherwise I would have credited the writer with this Top Tip.

When your child is throwing a wobbly, say to them repeatedly 'Don't laugh', 'Don't laugh', 'Don't laugh'..................

Sounds crazy but I have used it since Sunday (and so has a friend whose DS is way worse than mine). Every single time, the tantrum has turned into giggles (mine and his).

Suck it and see Cx

MY sister told me this!

IT DOES WORK! Ive been doing it all week! Its the best!

They still have the blasted tantrums tho, but its soon over.

A week on and it's still working for us. Have fine tuned it to me having a dead-pan face when I say it. If he sees me laughing too soon it takes longer to work.

Works for DH too.

YIPPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Brilliant, it works! I just overheard DD having a bit of a tanty in the bath (she doesn't so much do angry tantrums as sad ones, she just WAILS about NOTHING) and went in to see what was going on. DH was obviously at the end of his tether (turned out later she was in this state because he hadn't been paying attention to some random bletherings in which she appeared to be proposing blood-letting as a cure for stomach ache, so I don't blame him) and walked out. I sat down by the side of the bath, and as soon as there was a gap in the howling, said 'don't laugh!' She immediately stopped, looked at me as if I was completely mad ... and started to giggle. Every time she started to look sad again I just went 'pfft' (stifled giggle and off she went again).

Of course my reward for this is that as soon as DH reappears she tells him she likes him, and he's very nice, and NO amount of coaxing from him will get a word of praise or affection for ME out of her.

Never mind, I shall just be assured that I know I am the Pre-schooler Whisperer, even if they don't recognise it.

I've been using this on my Dc and it works a treat, it also works when she's just whining about stuff, many thanks currypowder, its excellent!!!!!!!!

Yes yes it realy does work. Did it twice over the weekend just as ds was about to have a winge and it just turned the mood right round. Briliant. Best bit of advice Ive had for a lond tine. Many thanks currypowder

i say to mine 'is that the best you can do?! and start jumping up and down having my own tanrum then say 'haha beat you!!' they just either laugh or look at me like im a mad woman!

AnAngelWithin · 26/11/2007 16:57

ok so i killed the thread and died of embarrassment at the same time lol

hickorydickory · 26/11/2007 20:11

ha ha almost wish ds was at tantrum throwing age! Can't wait to try this out (especially Hekates's technique!)

In the interim will practice on dh next time he's in a huff about something!

WendyWeber · 26/11/2007 20:16

Ooooh, this rings bells with me - one of mine was a terrible whingebag/crybaby and instead of getting fed up with her, when I was in the right mood (rare ) I used to say "nooooo, you're not crying hard enough, cry harder, you're just not trying!" and she would stop (and even laugh sometimes)!

Reverse psychology (???) is magic!

DaisyNightingale · 26/11/2007 20:22

I'm laughing myself reading all of these

I have a horrendous time with my 5 yo DS who can't utter a word without it sounding like a whine, or be asked to do anything before kicking off in an "It's not fair" styleee. We've tried ignoring him, but that just enrages him more amd prolongs the tantrum.

Can't wait till tomorrow to try this out!
