DD1 has just turned 2 - should she still be drinking out of a spouted beaker?

Hi,

I have tried her with just plain water in a cup but as you can imagine it was like niagra falls as she got so excited with it.... have tried not putting much in, sitting with her, holding the cup etc several times and i know it is perseverance on my part but as DD2 is 8 months I don't get much time.... and she does love her juice so much I feel i would be spending half the day with her practising... How long did it take for your children to go from beaker to cup? I know I need to keep trying but just wanted some advice please.

A Doidy cup is meant to be good. It's slanted so they don't have to tip it so much,

Well ds2 is 3.8 and still has a cup with a spout for his water at night. He's soooo clumsy. He has a glass during the day but it's still a bit hit and miss.

Ds1 got used to a glass when he was teeny tiny. They're all different so I wouldn't stress about it - keep using the beaker until it's less problematic.

Just keep trying with her when you get chance. She will get the hang of it eventually.

Thanks.... We have a doidy cup and several cups actually1 (the baby/toddler cup industry must make a fortune! ) The doidy is what I keep trying her with... Just don't want her to be the only one to have a spouted cup when she starts nursery next year if we haven't cracked it by then!

DS has only just mastered it without spillage, 2 years 7 months, we use a doidy cup and find it fantastic, he just pours other cups all over himself.

boo64 · 21/11/2007 14:52

I don't understand really why it matters that much - as long as they move on to a cup at say 3 or 4? I save a lot of soggy clothes by sticking with spouty cups and I will switch later (although ds does have an open cup at nursery and also occasionally with a small amount of water at home to be honest)

EmsMum · 21/11/2007 14:57

we kept our tommy tippee cups for ages for taking out or anywhere other than the kitchen.

stay with the spout for juice till she's got the hang of drinking water out of a cup without too much spillage. Also do use straws. They are supposed to be better for the teeth for drinking juice etc anyway.

You may even find the nursery prefers lidded cups or sports top bottles... the latter are what schoolkids use after all to prevent accidentally drowned work!

Just wanted to know what the developmental stage of beaker to cup was really.... Thanks.

Update! Gave her her cup before dinner - bib on - and it's almost as if she is another child drinking from her doidy cup! She drank perfectly! she had 3 half cups full and only spilt a few splashes - think I will give her the cup to use at meal times though as i wouldn't trust her yet to drink in the living room just yet! Thanks everyone!

Just proves - They like to keep us guessing!

Dd3 is nearly to. She can drink perfectly well out of a normal cup. For me that is lnot the problem. The problem is she then likes to pour the juice or water all over her dinner and everyone else's .

mmsparkle · 13/04/2011 13:27

My 20month old DD will happily drink out of, well, anything from bottle to bathtime toys (stacking cups with holes in the bottom).
As MRSSLOCOMB said though, she does like to pour the water out onto her high chair tray for water play fun.

I tried the DOIDY cup today - not sure if it's genius, or stupid... it tipped over at least 3 times with minimal assistance...

Ds3 4.9yrs uses a spouted cup for milk, one with a lid snd straw for water much of the time at home and a beaker at nursery. Ds1 15yrs and ds2 13 yrs use adult cups/glasses so I expect it happens at some point.
