Hypoglycemia - too many red blood cells / low blood sugar at 3 days old

My baby is now almost 5 weeks old and from what I can see is doing great.

He was born via EMCS and it turned out he had too many red blood cells and low blood sugar. The thing is that this was not noticed until 3 days old when we went back due to him having blood in his stool, he was asymptomatic and they don't beliehe the blood in his stool was related. Anyway, they just took bloods as they didn't know what was causing it and it was found by surprise that his blood sugar level was down to 0.9mmol and he needed to be on a glucose drip.

I feel like this entire experience has been quite traumatic and I'm now worried that my child might have suffered brain damage. I know that nobody on here will be able to tell me whether or not he has and I'm not even sure why I'm posting but I just needed to write it all down. I just love him so much and don't want him to have a harder life, I keep blaming myself for not having seen it myself before but I didn't even know what to look for despite this being my second child.

Hi op, so sorry you are going through this worrying time. Hospitals don’t routinely check blood sugar level, and lots of babies (including mine) are completely asymptomatic when having low blood sugar so you really shouldn’t blame yourself for not realising! I’m going to pm you....

@Donhill would you please be able to DM me about this too? I had a different but similar worry about hypoglycaemia at birth too - I had delayed colostrum due to blood loss and mg baby had a weak cry for a short while and was a bit weak before the midwives finally gave us some formula. My husband has suffered PTSD because of it and is now obsessed with her milestones.
