17 month old small for age

My DS has always been on the smaller end of his charts, but this week as the sun has come out I've been going through his summer clothes to see if anything still fits from last year, all his 6-9 month shorts still fit, with a bit of room still in the waist! And last night I put him to bed on a 6-9 short legged romper that was still pretty roomy on the body. He's definitely a lot taller than last year, some t shirts fit but some getting short, and trousers in this size would definitely be too short. I'm 95% sure I'm worrying about nothing.. I am aren't I?! He's really active, been walking since he was 11 months, spends all day playing with his 3 y/o sister or the other children at nursery, so I am guessing he's just slim and burns off a lot of energy, but I just feel shocked these baby clothes still fit! He has a great appetite and eats a lot and is a normal healthy boy... Should I just stop worrying?

I wouldn't worry! He sounds healthy and happy. My 3 year old DS is similar and still fits clothes for 2 year olds! Every shop seems different anyway (JoJo sizing massive compared to ASDA etc) so wouldn't trust them to be accurate. My DS was born on the 43rd centile and is now on the 25th technically but honestly I can't worry. He's tall and lean and active.

Thank you. I think I know that really and mostly I don't worry, then every so often I just get a bee in my bonnet about it, he got weighed at a hospital appointment a couple of months ago and they said he was on the light side (but if happy, meeting milestones etc then not to worry), and even though they said not to worry I couldn't stop thinking about it... I'm sure it's just me over thinking again!

If the hospital told you not to worry then I wouldn't give it a second thought Smile

@Foreverbaffled you're right. I feel really stupid for worrying (and starting a Mumsnet thread!) now. Damn brain worrying over nothing!

Thanks for the reassurance though Smile

Don't feel stupid! I have had the most horrendous post-natal anxiety after both my babies were born so I know the worry all too well and am very over cautious with everything... but this has never worried me and you mustn't worry either!

Shorts are not a good item of clothing to judge this by as they are elastic mostly and length can be variable.

My son is 5 and today had shorts aged 2-3 years on and they were too big 🤷

My DS is the same age and a little titch Grin his dad is only 5'8 and weighs a couple of stone less than me has a naturally slight build, and he's the tallest man on his side of the family so I'm not expecting DS to grow up a rugby player, exactly.

I bought him some dungarees that are meant to be shorts from Jojo in 12-18 months for this summer and they nearly come down to his ankles! Most of his stuff is size 12-18 months from Next or H+M and it does fit but he still has a lot of room in it.

I tried to measure his height recently and the measurement I got was off-the-charts small. It is hard to measure a wriggly toddler with a home tape measured! I have to say I was worried after that, so I took him to a health visitor clinic this week. They measured him properly and said he is between the 2nd and 9th centile for height and between the 9th and 25th for weight, which is pretty much where he has been since birth. They also said he seemed to be thriving. Smile

It was a big relief and was the first time he had been seen face to face by a HV since before the first lockdown. I'd recommend doing this if you're still worried and if HV clinics are opening up in your area. I had to book in and had to wear a mask but otherwise the clinic was as normal and the HV I saw was really lovely.
