Hi has anyone else experienced these ds2 had just had his third one. He needs to have tests done as they do not seem to be fever related. Does anyone know what tests these are or how they are performed?
Any info would be greatly recieved.

A child I nannied for had 4. His were linked to high temps I think and he has grown out of them now.

ds1 has had 3.

His were fever related i think but he had an eeg and an ecg.

with an EEG they put little things on dc head that measure brainwave activity. they may flash strobe lighting at him.lasted about half an hour.

ECG is just a heart rate monitor.

DS had one of these week before last, his was fever related although he also had breathing problems at the same time. Sorry to not be more help - they didn't recommend any tests just kept him in for observation but I guess he's only had one. DH also had them as a child, but again his were fever related. Can you speak to the GP and ask them to explain more to you what tests they are doing and what they are trying to establish.

Thanks scorpio, you never get the chance to ask the questions, you dont really think to. Is it distressing for the child how old was yours when the tests were done ds2 is 19 months.

If it's not fever related, how is it an febrile convulsion? The very definition of febrile convulsion means that it is fever related.

My dd1 had unexplained seizures when she would stop breathing and have a fit, sometimes caused by a fright, sometimes they just spontaneously happened when she was crying. She had an EEG and an ECG at the age of 13 months and both were normal. The seizures were called 'reflex anoxic seizure'.

Sorry got the terminology wrong! Thats what the drs are calling them at the moment as there is no apparent temp, but say it could be when the temp is spiking, so i may not always realise he has one

febrile convulsions are caused when the temperature goes up very suddenly - my dd2 had one not so long ago. She had been a bit ill before hand but not too bad, then sudeenly she was fitting with a temperature of 40°C plus.

It's very scarey isn't it? Does he have a temperature after the fit? Does he seem ill at all when he has one?

jacobliam · 18/11/2007 18:49

All 3 have been without a temp, the first he was treated for meningitis due to rash but came back all clear. 2nd one was ealry hours of thurs and third was fri nite he is only now coming out with a crope type cough. But his temp is no more than 38 which is really classed as normal.
It is really scary, the last 2 times i have been on my own dealing with it other half at work. I wont let him sleep in his room on his own at the moment as im just so worried it may happen again. chances are it wont but you never can tell!

yes definitely stay in his bedroom, as he's had two convulsions in the last couple of days.

If in any doubt always get him to A&E - I've rushed both of my dds to A&E when they've had convulsions.

I hope it doesn't happen again.

Me too hoping we will hear today about getting the tests done

Hi this is the first time I have posted anything on mumsnet. My 3 year old had a convulsion for the first time yesterday and it was the most frightening experience of my parenting so far (& have 4 children ranging from 21 to 3 years)Same as the other little boy he had a slight temp for which I had given (although try to avoid)paracetamol and he was not due anymore until another hour.. When he started to go blue I called 999 and they were brilliant talked me through checking breathing ect and 1st paramedic got here in 6 mins ... He is a lot better today bit clingy but to be expected .. now wondering is it going to happen again ??
