26 months old - Does this behaviour warrant investigation?

Hi,

Son, about to turn 26 months is displaying some traits that have me worried...

Tip toe walks (But will walk flat footed if you ask him, but always reverts back to tip toes)

Lays down on his side to play with cars and watch them motion backwards and forwards (Not excessively as he will go and do other activities if there’s other stuff going on at playgroup etc)

Always biting and chewing things

A few times a day will jump up and down and sort of flap his hands if excited. He only does it for a few seconds but i’ve noticed it’s a few times a day lately if he’s excited about something. If music is on and I ask him to dance this is how he dances (jumps up and down, little bit of flapping and clapping)

He hit all milestones on time (although didn’t walk til 18 months)

Great eye contact, sociable, likes other kids, puts 2 to 3 words together in sentences, lots of pointing and sharing interests, listens and understands most instructions, nursery have no concerns and said to me “he’s very clever”

Have done M Chat and got low risk, but I’m thinking there’s some sensory stuff going on? Or can what I’ve described be typical behaviour in a toddler who has just turned 2?

I feel really worried as i’m not sure if I need to contact my HV or even look in to some kind of private assessment to put my mind at rest?

Any help/advice appreciated

He sounds like a bog standard two year old.

But no harm in contacting your HV if it will put your mind at rest. He's probably due for his two year old check anyway?

VillageFete · 16/05/2021 15:47

@NuffSaidSam Hi, yeah I guess he is due his check but since the Pandemic hit we’ve heard nothing from the HV. I’ll have to chase it up.

It’s the little quirks that are bothering me. I wasn’t sure if it was typical behaviour. My DD didn’t do any of them, but it was a long time since she was a toddler and you do forget things.

When we are at playgroup he is the only one tip toe walking and it got me thinking...

I would have a chat with the HV definitely, even if it is just to put your mind at rest. How is your LO with changes to routine? Do you notice any obsessive behaviour around anything?

He sounds like he's doing great

My 3.5 year old DS still tip toe walks sometimes (doesn't when wearing shoes or told not to) and a physio put it down to hypermobility (which I also have) so doesn't have to be an ASD trait only. By all means ask Hv for some reassurance but I wouldn't be concerned by what you have said.

Do you have any update @VillageFete ?

VillageFete · 04/11/2023 22:12

@c307 He’s now 4 and in Reception and absolutely thriving. Still a couple of little quirks, but he’s amazing and pleased to say I have no concerns! He outgrew all of those things (Except he still to this day occasionally tip toe walks when not wearing shoes)

Hi any updates please ? ☺️

@Claire123ee He’s fabulous. So funny and he impresses me all of the time with how much he’s come on (He’s 5 and a half now)

He lacks common sense and I do feel as though he has a bit of a “foggy brain” at times and I do still worry about him occasionally, but I believe developmentally he’s spot on. I wish i’d have enjoyed him more as a toddler.
