Overcoming issues with textures

Any advice/experience?
Lb is 4 and hates being hot. He doesn't like jumpers or thick or tight clothes particularly. All of this is fine but I'm becoming increasingly concerned about him wearing his school uniform in September! I've tried to show him other boys and girls wearing theirs, make it etc but so far he's not having any of it because he says jumpers are "spiked".... I'm probably thinking about it too much but I just want to hit the nail on the head!

Could you get him some of the school uniform now and then work on him wearing it. Jumpers are particularly 'spiked' when they're new, so if you wash it through several times and then maybe get him to wear it for short periods of time to start. It will be worn in and hopefully a bit less spiky by the time school starts.

If he doesn't like it tight, size up so it's loose.

Ime they're not too strict with uniform in reception and he should be mostly able to take his jumper off if he's hot.

If he really can't tolerate it, buy a thin/light top in the right colour and sew the school badge on. Explain to the school he has issues with texture. If it is a decent school they will understand and work with you.

If it's the garment as a whole then this might not help, but I believe Asda are the first supermarket to make sensory friendly school uniforms with softer seams and labels. Could you try these and see if it helps ?

That's amazing! Thank you both so much :)
I think the thing I'm dreading the most is the jumper and I just don't know what to do about it 🙈
I will definitely get the trousers and top from the Asda range though, what an amazing idea!

I hope you find something that works OP!

I may be totally wrong here but if he is being bothered by a spikey feeling, he may well not be hot but confusing the sensation, and because part of his clothing is irritating him he wants them off.

At 4 children don't always correctly identify what a problem is, so it's common for them to say they have a tummy ache or ear ache but actually something else is wrong. They are two body parts they know and so they often say one of them to identify a general feeling of unwell or pain but in reality it's maybe a headache or a sore throat etc.

So your DS may be saying he's hot as he knows he's uncomfy..but as he can't identify what's the issue other than "spikey" feelings he may be concluding that he's hot which is a common sensation and that would mean that the jumper should come off.

Thank you! I think you're right, I think he does have some sort of sensory issue when it comes to textures but o just don't know how to combat it! I think he just says something is sticky or spikey when he isn't comfortable!
