Our son had severe glue ear with significant hearing loss for a year between 18-30 months before grommet insertion which fixed hearing problem. Now at 36 months he is only just beginning to use the words we were expecting 18 months ago. Two very worried parents seeking anyone with similiar experiences to reassure us the way the NHS so far hasn't. He has developed a vocabulary of about 30 words over the last month and his understanding is much improved, but we can't help worrying about what the future holds for him. Any replies would be gratefully received.

No experience, but i think 30 words over the last month is fantastic! Sure he'll come on leaps and bounds now.

My DS also suffers from glue ear. He is on his third lot of grommets.

At 3 he was only saying odd words (about 15-20 if I remember correctly).

He was on a waiting list to see a SALT but the list was HUGE and after months of hearing nothing, we decided to see one privately. She really helped, mainly in giving me advice - suggesting activities to do with him etc.

We did eventually get to see an NHS one too, who came up with other ideas (eg clapping syllables out "ba-na-na").

Main thing is, that his speech did develop and now at 6, he's caught up (though I only noticed him saying "l" properly in the last year).

DD is also a glue ear sufferer and on her second lot of grommets, she had considerable loss for approx 12-15 months before she was diagnosed.

She lso had delayed speach but now at 6 she has caught up and often gets herself into trouble at school for talking in class. She still has difficulty saying a couple of sounds but it will come in time.
