Nightmare bedtimes for older children

Hi my children are 8 and 5. Other than when they were babies there were no issues at bedtime. I do routine pjs, brush teeth and wash and then we lie on bed and read. For the past month they have started to be really silly when reading. They're not at all interested. They go under the blankets, jump on bed etc. What do you do when they get like this? Bedtimes are a nightmare after "reading" I put them to bed and they have half an hour to themselves to colour or read to themselves but now they take turns to.come downstairs or they go in each other rooms and end up playfighting. They are noiser then than they are through the day and it means as a single mum I never get that quiet time on the evening. Many nights I've given up watching a film because if it.

What time do they go to bed and get up? Mine are same age and can sometimes mess about

@NoKnit it's lights out at 8.30 for both of them. I tried an earlier time for youngest but she would come into her sisters room when were reading. They usually get up around 8 at weekend and for school they get up at 7.30.
