DH thinks 5 month DC sounding 'slow' after fall from bed

Hello, so our 5 month DD fell from our bed on Thursday morning. I fell asleep feeding, DH wasn't in bed at the time on the other side and DD rolled off, sickening thud sound on our wooden floor. DD cried a bit from shock but seemed ok (I was hysterical, when DH rushed in he spent more time calming me than her). Anyway we looked her over and kept an eye out for fluid, vomiting etc and she seemed happy and fine, so no A&E or doctors.

Last two days DD has been making strange closed mouth sounds, its as if every noise she makes she refuses to open her mouth, even crying is mostly with mouth closed. DH says he's concerned she sounds 'slow'. I've been googling Apraxia and freaking out about it being caused from head injuries.

Has anyone had experience of something similar after a fall? Before the fall she had had a big week with motor skills, really mastering rolling over (hence the fall). Am I being paranoid and this is just a phase ???

Step away from google! If you’re worried, take her to the GP. Both of my children have had similar falls and for weeks afterwards I was really paranoid about brain injuries and thought I saw things that weren’t there.

If she is feeding ok and hasn’t shown any of the symptoms the NHS says to look out for, chances are she’s probably absolutely fine but if you want to put your mind at rest then just speak to the doctor.

thanks @Lolalovesmarmite you're right Google is not helping! She is feeding ok, I'm just paranoid that she doesn't seem as responsive as before. I've made an appointment with our GP for peace of mind.

Good to hear that your DC were ok in the end :) I know alot of babies just bounce off hard surfaces and that the first fall is a bit of a parenthood milestone, but it still makes me sick thinking about it!

I would personally have taken her to be checked over after a significant fall at this age.

It’s so hard during covid to know what to do with things like this! My advice would be to call 111 if you are ever unsure - they can make emergency appointments for you if needed and will advise you.

I hope your little one (and you!) are okay now

They’re so resilient at this age but the fact you’ve even noticed this is worrying. I’d also phone for advice now. 111 will likely get you a timed appointment at a walk in centre today because of the age of your baby. I think some follow up is best. Hope everything is ok and let us all know how you get on xxx

Update, went to the GP today for a checkup and the doctor was happy with her responses (checking inside nose, ears & mouth, check around head and neck motion). DD has been acting fine, still making the strange noises but also starting to make new sounds, with her mouth open, so more usual babbling sounds. I think we should be ok...(relief!)

When I retold what happened to the doc I nearly got upset again, I’m going to have to toughen up, but that was a tough lesson learnt the hard way!
