can anyone tell me what order teeth come through in? DS's teething nightmare continues...

DS is 20 months and has just the front 4 teeth (2 top and 2 bottom), which came in between 11 and 15 months. Each tooth seems to come seperately and to take several weeks of pain and misery to emerge. Now he seems to be getting one more tooth at the front top (eye tooth?) and one molar on the other side at the top. This seems totally wierd to me, and we are both exhausted and miserable with months and months of broken sleep. I can't keep giving him calpol every day, can I? Anyone got any idea what order the teeth should come through in? Or has anyone had a truly awful teether and any advice to offer? Help!

sorry to hear you are having such a bad time. It is my recollection that the eye teeth and molars are the worst ones. I find that ibrufen is a better pain reliever as it lasts for longer and you can combine it with calpol. I remember using a homeopathic or perhaps it as a tissue salt called teetha when mine were little (dd2 was a nighare when teething- she used to get this awful cough too that kept everyone awake.)Not sure if you believe in alternative medicine but I found it helped.

thanks SJ - I've got ibuprofen for children but don't tend to use it (and I have no idea why) - I'll give that a go with the calpol. I don't believe in homeopathy at all, but I still bought the teetha powders and nelsons powders and they have had no effect on DS, but I know lots of people swear by them. I will live in hope of these being the worst of the teeth (I'm dreaming that he may start to sleep through once all his teeth are here...)

the first teeth are normally the two front bottom and then top. The next ones are normally the ones either side of the front top and bottom two they have already. The next are normally the 4 pre-molars - you then have a gap between the front teeth and the back pre-molars which gets filled in later with the eye teeth. My 13 month old has 8 teeth (4 top and bottom) and is currently getting his 4 pre-molars in all at once.

my 18m dd is getting her teeth in a slightly funny order too- she has 2 top front teeth and 4 bottom front teeth and has just acquired 3 pre-molars, with no sign of her missing top incisors yet. So I think variation in the order they come through is probably not that uncommon.

thanks Seona and Cat. The teething chart made me laugh - DS is so far off their timescales!

DS1 cut his first tooth at 5 months and yet DS2 cut his first at 9 months. Ds1 cut them in the "supposed" order, DS2 had 3 top teeth, 2 bottom teeth and then cut a molar. There was me putting anbesol on the front ones that appeared to be coming down and I look in his mouth and see a whole blooming molar poking through

He is 17 month and still doesn't have the "lateral incisor" tooth next to the front top ones. So he has gaps and yet 4 molars!!
