First word, first tooth, first step - will they ever happen???

My DS is nearly 15 months and still can't walk - he's just started crawling and cruising very tentatively. He babbles a lot but doesn't say anything that sounds like an actual word. And he still has no teeth! Dr and HV say he's fine but its difficult not to worry, especially when I've heard that babies who walk late tend to talk early, and vice versa. He does have very good fine motor skills though. Has anyone else's DC been late with things like this and should I worry or will he get there in the end?

Hi, I have known several children who didn't walk till 18 months or later. My dd1 was a very slow talker, was only putting two or three words together long after her second birthday - now - at age 9 - you would never believe that had been the case! I wonder if the lack of teeth is influencing the type of communication he is using - it is hard to talk clearly without teeth! If your dr and hv have taken a good look at him and considering that he has good fine motor skills then I don't think you have anything to worry over - he will get there in the end - and when he's a 25 year old rugby playing barrister for example you'll have a lot of fun saying "well to hear him in court you'd never think he didn't say a word till he was x age"

my son was late to walk - 17 months before he totally gave up crawling. He wasn't saying anything till about 15/16 months, but now he is 3 and is VERY verbal and regularly people comment on how good his speech is. All this rubbish about how they must be saying mama by 12 months - ignore it. Teethwise my DS got his first at 7mos, but it is normal not to have them at your son's age. Don't worry!

They're supposed to say mama at 12 months ??? Bigger two didn't do that - better start 'encouraging' dd3

beowulf · 08/11/2007 08:53

My 2-year-old DS1 has not yet said mama. His vocabulary includes "mould", "gear" and "dark" but not mama. I put it down to him being a boy

RubySlippers · 08/11/2007 08:56

My DS only started walking 2.5 weeks ago and he is now 17 months
he was a very late crawler as well (1 week before his 1st birthday)
your DS is developing in his own sweet time - doesn't sound like there is much to worry about - he is cruising around and weight bearing

Completely agree with other posters.

I did not sit until 9 months, did not walk until 23 months and did not say much until nearly three years.

Now, I do a lot of sport, am generally very active and speak three languages fluently.

Oh and I cut all my four eye teeth in one go!

DD is nearly nine month and not sittingn or crawling but rolling... I have to be patient and try - like you - to not worry!

Thanks - thats what I needed to hear! Wish all my friends didn't have super advanced walking talking babies that I can't help comparing DS to!

Thank goodness, I thought it was just me! My DD is 16 months old and tentatively cruises around some furniture, stands on her own for about 3 seconds twice a week but crawls around at high speed. All the other nine babies in my ante-natal class walked months ago. She says Mumma, Dada and occasionally Nanna but that's it. I can't FORCE her to walk so will take her to the HV in a few weeks if there is no sign just to check all is okay. I can't help but worry though.

maviscrewit · 08/11/2007 14:14

My dd2 didn't sit until 11 months, crawled at 13 months and now at 14 months still won't stand up at all! She was referred to a physio by my HV and we went yesterday. She rolled her eyes and said for goodness sake why do HV's worry people. She said she would only worry if she was showing no signs of wanting to move anywhere. The HV said if she's not walking by 15 months to go back but the physio said not to be silly and let her get there in her own time! If I'm honest with myself I'm not worrying, she seems fine and happy to me. And I am a worrier at heart!

One tip though, she did say a ride on trike where their feet can touch the ground are very good to encourage more upright moving. My dd crawls with her head down and therefore crashes quite a lot . I sat her on a trike this morning and it was like a revelation, you could see her thinking wow I can see!! She didn't manage any movement but it will come when her legs get stronger! She's just a laid back customer and expects the world to come to her . She doesn't talk much either, so I really wouldn't worry, they are all individuals.

Beowulf - How on earth does your LO know the word "mould" !!!!!! Are you one of those who cuts the mouldy bits off cheese

beowulf · 08/11/2007 19:30

It's not as bad as it sounds - there were a few patches of mould appearing in the bathroom on the sealant round the bath, and DS1 wanted to know what it was. . I don't go quite as far as cutting the mould off cheese but as a student I'd only throw away bread that had more than one type of mould on it DH has higher standards, though, and I'm not allowed to inflict my low standards on the kids.

not read the thread, but my ds is 15 months too, he isn't walking either. He has babbled dadda and a few things we think are words but only dh and can understand them so dont worry! i had the same worries about ds crawling, it seemed to take him ages, but all of a sudden he was like lightening!
