Cot self talking (instead of nap/sleep as they should) is a good thing

I'm having a headache with my 22 months old at nap time. Two days in a row, he wriggles in his cot up and down while talking/singing to himself.

I feel trapped between the impulsive urge to go to his room and tell him he's supposed to sleep and the more sensible wisdom of ignoring him for the next two hours regardless when or ever he could fall asleep.

Then I found this article about some kind of research. No idea how they came up with the conclusion. But certainly it put a positive spin on this might-be-stressful situation.

Want to share it to those who are equally in this particular battle with our beloved toddler. Grin

"Crib Talk: Talking at Bedtime
Updated July 20, 2018

Does your toddler or preschooler talk to herself when she's alone in bed? Her monologues may help her make sense of her day. At least, that's the theory from Katherine Nelson, a psychologist at the City University of New York. Nelson and her colleagues studied "crib talk" and found it to be very rich.

New Experiences
Their evidence shows that small children who chatter to themselves are re-creating their world by retelling and interpreting key experiences, such as being left at day care or meeting a new pet. By talking these experiences over, your child finds meaning in them and this, in turn, enhances her developing sense of self.

Listen and Learn
These special musings are part of your child's growing emotional and cognitive skills. So listen to what he has to say without interrupting. Don't be surprised if you hear your own scolding voice or an imitation of your comfort talk. He's going over everything that happened to him, which naturally includes what goes on in your family."

BTW, my LO spent 2.5hours in cot yesterday afternoon which including 1.5hour self talking/singing/bubbling/or whatever you call it. It's been one hour now today, while the clock keeps ticking...

Ds is 16 months and was sitting in his cot singing to himself and doing the actions to wheels on the bus! It was heartbreakingly adorable to watch on the monitor ❤️
