DS3 has just recently (about 2 weeks ago) learned how to roll over on to his tummy (in one direction only). Since then he's made no attempt to roll back again, but has been practising getting his bum in the air and pushing forward with his legs......this morning it finally "paid off" and he moved the grand distance of...............approx 1 inch. He's still trying to fathom what to do with his arms to make it easier and to go further. DH likened it to break dancing .

Now - I've seen "commando" crawling and your standard "on all fours" crawling (which DS2 did - and he started off nothing like this) .......which do you reckon these attempts at moving forwards are going to result in? Or am I going to have a child flopping across the floor like a cross between a caterpillar and a break dancer

I think once the arms get going you will have a commando one

lol

My friends dd did a commando GI Joe style crawl which made me literally pmsl everytime I saw her do it
Her bum was in the air slightly and she would get along with her arms.

V funny

you reckon? DS1 never crawled at all (and even now at 7yrs old when "crawling" around the floor with DS2 looks very ungainly LOL). And DS2 did everything in "perfect" chronological order and in the "normal" way of doing things. While I've seen babies commando crawling I've never actually seen how they start doing it so it's all rather new to me.

My dd did "nose and toes" to start with. (looked a bit like a snowplough or something) Very vocal, that's for sure, but not terribly effective!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 06/11/2007 12:39

mlf - what did she develop in to? And how long did it take......????

Well, nose and toes started about 5 months. She cruised at about 8 months, then commando crawled about a couple of weeks after, and then it took about 3 weeks to proper crawling. She still vastly prefers being on her feet though, and is now a bit over 10 months. I've never seen anyone else's baby doing 'nose and toes' - I'm glad she isn't alone!

StealthPolarBear · 06/11/2007 13:27

My DS did this - pushing his bum in the air with his nose on the carpet and legs straight
He then moved on to rocking backwards and forwards on hands and knees, then commando crawling, and as of a couple of days ago, 'real' crawling.

ok thanks for that. DS2 started pushing up on all 4's at about 6 1/2 months, crawled at 7 months, was climbing up stairs at 7 1/2 months and walking at 10........

so by reading this is sounds like I'm (thankfully) not going to have an early crawler - he's just turned 5 months - and he'll probably be similar to DS2..............?

My DD ( 6 1/2 months) has been crawling on her head for the past month and I've done nothing to change her as its so funny. Is that me being a bad mother?!! She gets everywhere she wants to get including throwing herself off furniture and this morning she was trying to get chair leg in her mouth when there was a carrot stick nearby.... Babies are brilliant!

These descriptions are hilarious! My dd1 learnt to move imperceptibly from one side of the room to the other on her back when i wasn't looking (before she could roll or crawl). I still don't know how she did it but one minute she'd be next to my foot, the next she'd be on the other side of the room chewing on some electrical wiring or something.

Bum shufflers are really funny too.
