Well, ds2 took one look, shook his head like a little old man and went back into the house (18 months) but ds1 jumped up and down laughing and shrieking like a lunatic(aged 4)

Desiderata · 05/11/2007 22:34

Well, I went to one this evening, and it was so fecking loud that I honestly believe I have garnered a tiny concept of what shell-shock is all about. And I mean no disrespect by that: I'm obviously uber-sensitive to loud explosions.

When I was a kid, fireworks were nowhere near as loud as they are now. All the toddlers were inside, crying their eyes out. That's not the way bonfire night should be.

Anyhow, to answer your OP, I would suggest at least five or six these days.

dd666 · 05/11/2007 22:35

my dd is 18mo she has loved the fireworks inside and out didnt think she would

handlemecarefully · 05/11/2007 22:36

2 yrs

dd was 7, ds was 6. I obviously produce wimps. I missed the big firework display at Disneyland because I was hiding under a table in the loo with dd. And I love fireworks. I will hold it against her forever!

EmsMum · 05/11/2007 22:48

We first went to a big outdoors display when DD was 6. Before that we were content to watch from the window. Part of the reason for not going before that was simply the crowds and waiting and lateness of public displays.

funnypeculiar · 05/11/2007 22:50

DS went to his first display on Friday (3.5) - complete with ear defenders ... loved it ... I don't think he heard a thing!

DaisyWheeeee · 05/11/2007 22:56

None of mine have ever been bothered by fireworks, even as toddlers. They're well 'ard though

handlemecarefully · 05/11/2007 22:58

Mine too ...as nails.

lemonaidtreasonandplot · 05/11/2007 23:23

DS was vaguely interested last year at 21 months. This year he was far more interested. He's not keen on the noise, but is quite sensitive to noise in general so just puts my hands over his ears.

sleepdeprived72 · 05/11/2007 23:26

My 2.5 year old watched 10 fireworks (Grandparents had bought about 50 especially for him) and then said can i go in and watch Thomas now. Enjoyed them but not big on attention span.

Clary · 05/11/2007 23:29

My DS2 was 2.5 IIRC the first time we all went to the big local display here. He wa sfine. He's a bit of a toughie tho.

I know I took DS1 when he was 3.5 (left baby DD with sitter) and he wasn't mad about it.

Children vary. We took a neighbour's DS along with us, he is almost 7, because his 5yo sister really didn't like them last year so they were staying at home.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 05/11/2007 23:33

Ds1 has never liked them much.
We went to a display on Sat. night and he hid is face in his hands and kept his hood up. He didn't cry and eventually after telling him they were 'sky deeks' (He is obsessed with snakes but calls them 'deeks') he was fine and enjoyed it more.
He is 2.

Ds2 is very mellow and was not bothered at a display at 4 months old (in a moby wrap under my coat) or this year at 1 year old.
He throughly enjoyed it!

pointydog · 05/11/2007 23:49

were talking about this tonight.

Dd1 went at age 3 but wanted to sit in the car, wasn't at all sure.

By age 4, she liked it and has been ever since.

It is very loud and unpleasant for little children often.

dd1 loved small fireworks in our back garden at nearly 3. This year, at nearly 4, took her to a big display - she quite liked it, loved the bonfire, the atmosphere, but wasn't keen on the big bangs and asked to go home after 10 minutes. The smoke also triggered mild asthma

Ripeberry · 06/11/2007 10:31

My DD1 aged five has always liked fireworks and we first started taking her when she was 19 months old.
DD2 is almost 3 and she enjoys fireworks as well and has been going to organised shows since she was just under a year old.
They don't seem scared of the loud bangs but don't like the screamers!

The moment they were born. Love them and always did. DS#2 was the only one at a party on Friday that didn't start crying when the big fireworks went up. He cheered and jumped about.

Actually I love them so I guess I didn't give them the chance to not like them. They got taken along every year. Bad mummy !

EricL · 06/11/2007 10:44

My DD who is three was scared of the bangs but loved the actual visual aspect of it.

When we covered up her ears with another scarf she was fine.

I guess next year she will not mind the noise. This was a large outdoor display though - so the noise was a little louder than my usual bunch of supermarket whimpers.

Boys are different creatures though and love all aspects of it.
