tummy time- is it worth the aggro?

DD is 6 months and hates to go on her tummy. She just winges and cries until I pick her up and no amount of distraction helps. Despite this I have dutifully continued to put her on her tummy every day hoping she will get used to it.
Should I give it up and accept that she probably won't crawl? Can they learn to crawl from sitting?
Do they get really frustrated if they don't crawl?

Both my DDs hated being on their tummies. I stopped bothering to do it, they both crawled though.

mamadoc · 05/11/2007 17:02

That's encouraging. I want to stop bothering but feel worried she will be immobile and frustrated, Did they do it from sitting?

no it's fine. lots of babies spend all day in a sling, never on the floor.

mamadoc · 05/11/2007 17:08

DD could also sit from 5 months and its all she really wants to do. She can lean over without falling now and I did wonder if she would bum shuffle instead.

No not worth the aggro. Of course they can learn to crawl from sitting. They just lean over and one day off they go (or at least that what my crawlers did). Two bum-shuffled.

Not worth it my 9 month old has been flying since he was 7 months and I never gave him any specific time in his tummy.

it's not new
it's good to strengthen muscles they wouldn't when lying on back, and generally good to be in a different position than in bouncy chair car seat etc etc. won't necessarily make them earlier to crawl tho

I think it's relatively new. Definitely wasn't mentioned when I had my older children.

hana · 05/11/2007 19:29

i think the expression 'tummy time' is a new thing, but the concept isn't - it's not something I scheduled in for my children, I just did it every now and then

juuule · 05/11/2007 19:32

Nope - I can't remember ever thinking or being told that I had to put my baby on it's front.

hana · 05/11/2007 19:35

but if you have older kids - they wouldn't have had all the things that exist today like bouncy chairs with lights and toys, highchairs that recline, activity arches etc etc - babies spend too long in the same position, and a change is good for them -

Both mine loathed being on their tummies and would howl, so I never did 'tummy time', they both crawled from about 8 months though.

juuule · 05/11/2007 19:43

Hana how old do you think they are?
My eldest is 20 and yes we did have bouncy chairs etc. I seem to remember first hearing about "tummy time" somewhere around when my now 7yo was a baby.

NowKnownAsMummy · 05/11/2007 19:44

DC1 loved being on tummy and crawled early, but DC2 wasn't bothered so I didn't push it - crawled later than DC1 but don't think in hindsight it was that important. DC1 just liked it and DC2 didn't! If they really like tummy time they will do it themselves as soon as they can roll anyway.

crokky · 05/11/2007 19:48

I don't think it's worth the aggro, my LO never crawled, just got up and cruised, then walked. He still doesn't want to crawl - it's no problem.

hana · 05/11/2007 19:51

no no, sorry juule! Even since dd1 was a baby there are so many more options and baby''junk'' paraphernalia around to ''waste'' spend your money on - babies aren't in many other positions other than on their backs, that's why tummy time is being advocated as an 'activity' (imo)

not suggesting you have kids in their 20s or anything lol

hana · 05/11/2007 19:52

oh god am putting foot in mouth here
am sure you know what I am saying (she said hopefully.....)

(will make exit now to put dds to bed)

hana · 05/11/2007 19:53

ok, just one last thing

even I had a rudimentary bouncy chair and I am the ripe old age of 37. it's all the other stuff too

(really going now!)

beckyg459 · 05/11/2007 19:58

My daughter hates being on her tummy screams and screams till I pick her up (but then she screams anyway!) On another note should I be worried that she doesnt roll over yet? (shes 20weeks old)

juuule · 05/11/2007 19:59

Hana - you have really made me smile.
Yes I do know what you mean. But even so I don't think that all the extra bits and pieces that are available for babies now make any difference really. Until they could sit up, mine seemed to have either been in a bouncy chair, lay on a mat or being carried around. So you can probably see why I'm not convinced of the benefits of upsetting babies who don't like to be on their tummies. Just my opinion.
