2 year old speech milestones

My daughter just turned 2 last month. After a slow start at talking, she now knows lots of words and says them clearly. She has only recently started putting two words together like 'daddy work' or 'bye bye cat' etc. I'm hoping we will help building on this. Her understanding is really good.

She has never once said her name. She knows her name, she answers to it. But she hadn't said it. She also won't use any pronouns like 'me or I' etc to talk about herself. Should I be worried that she is 'delayed' as such with her speech, or is this something that is likely to come soon?

I've just started mindfully trying to say 'mine' and 'I' more as I'm really bad for saying 'that's mummy's' or 'mummy is doing the washing' etc.

Any advice?

Just turned two is an age where speech varies hugely, but she sounds like she's on track to me. I think good understanding, a good number of single words, and starting to put two or three words together is pretty much exactly what a HV or GP would be looking for at 24 months. I also think putting words together often comes before using any sort of pronoun for herself or for you (with the possible exception of 'mine!') or using her name to refer to herself – I would guess you'll see one or both of those appear in the next couple months.

I am also currently trying to stop saying 'give that to Mummy' for similar reasons...

She is not delayed with her speech, pronouns and using her name to refer to herself is not expected at 2YR, it's closer to 2.5Y at the earliest.

Thanks so much for your replies. It is really appreciated. I'm so happy with how she's doing as she was really slow to begin talking and her understanding wasn't great. But she's come on leaps and bounds. Her understanding is amazing now. She can follow instructions really well.

She can count to ten and can count items. She knows her colours and is starting to learn some letters of the alphabet. I feel she's doing well but it's nice to have a bit of reassurance as she was honestly such a slow starter!

Thanks so much. Smile
