If a baby sits early, will they walk early too? Or is it totally random?

Please don't think I'm trying to show off because I'm genuinely interested and I know they pretty much all get there in the end, but I am really surprised to find ds2 is sitting confidently for around 3 - 5 minutes with no intervention, and he's been doing it a week or two which would be about 4.5 months. I'm sure ds1 didn't sit this soon, so it strikes me as a bit weird and I'm wondering if others can relate? Did your baby also walk early etc? (I'd rather not if poss because the house is a wreck and I will need the next 10 months or so to make it safe!!!!)

Honestly, this isn't a 'my child is gifted' thread. Not my fault if he is, anyway... but I am interested in him as a sort of scientific specimen, so would be glad of your opinions!!

DS sat at a similar age.. i was also surprised ! he then remained totally immobile until 11 months, when he crawled and did not walk until 18 months!

Flightthebluetouchpaper · 04/11/2007 17:43

Oh fantastic!! Thankyou Lulu. I was so afraid I'd get flamed for asking

It is kinda exciting when they do stuff though, isn't it?!

it is, but the not moving is a bit easier

DD did not sit until around 6 - 7 months, and did not crawl until 11 months, and then walked at 16 months, so they have been quite similar in some respects

goingfor3 · 04/11/2007 17:46

Both DD's sat at 6 months which is average and walked at 9 months.

Flightthebluetouchpaper · 04/11/2007 17:47

It is so interesting how different they can be...already mine are not the same in many ways, Oh dear, I think it's a trick of nature...you think you know about babies and then the next one is just a big learning curve all over again!!!

I think it is pretty random, though have a friend with 4 kids who have all been every physically (the youngest started crawling at 4mo). Mine didn't move until 6mo (rolled), crawl until 9mo, both then cruised immediately and the oldest walked at 10.5mo. I agree that an early walker is less safer than a late walker - but I don't think you can either stop or encourage them, they just get there when they are ready for it.

My DS2 sat by himself, with his hands on the floor for support at 3.5 months, a couple of weeks later without his hands. He took longer than I thought he would to crawl, he was 8 months in the end but he walked at 11 months which is a little bit earlier than average but not that much. Mind you he was and is a big lad, tall and wide, and I wonder if this slowed him down a bit. I don't think you DS is in imminent danger of walking too soon but you never know. The earliest I have ever heard of for walking is 8 months so you have a little bit of time.

Not much you can do about it either way. I don't know about you but I was a tiny bit sad he sat so early. Being my last baby I would have liked him to stay a baby a bit longer but he had other plans!

Jojay · 04/11/2007 17:54

My friends little boy sat at 5 months - quite early - but now at 10 months is making no attempt to crawl or move around at all, let alone walk.

My god daughter also sat at 5 months, crawled at 7 months and walked at 9 months.

My ds has been text book - sat at 6 months, crawled at 8 months and is now confidently cruising at 11 months.

So the moral of the story - who knows?? There's no rhyme or reason to it as far as I can tell!!

ConnorTraceptive · 04/11/2007 19:05

DS sat at 19 weeks and stayed firmly on his butt until he decided to walk at 16months. He didn't roll over until he was nearly 8 months either.

Blandmum · 04/11/2007 19:07

dd sat unaided at 6 months and walked at 11 months. mind you she'd been rolling to get to things she wanted from 4 months, so I never had that nice time when they can sit and play with things, and stay put!

JodieG1 · 04/11/2007 19:13

My ds2 crawled at 6 months and was walking at 9 months, he's almost 10 months now. Same with ds1 but dd was later and didn't walk til over 1.

suedonim · 04/11/2007 19:16

My dd1 sat at 5mths and crawled shortly after that. She walked at about 14mths, exactly the same age as my other three dc who sat and crawled later than her.

mawBOOM · 04/11/2007 19:19

My ds sat at around that age. By 5 months, he was leaning over and picking up things. The HV said he was like an 8 or 9 month old at that stage. But he seemed to like sitting very much as that's all he did until he crawled at 11 months, pulled up at 15 months and didn't walk until 20 months. So take from that what you will!

ingles2 · 04/11/2007 19:43

Both Ds's were sitting at 4-5 months and walked at 9 months. So physically were ahead for a little while but then slowed right down, while everyone else caught up. In fact, DS1 who is very tall for his age then was quite behind as he was so uncoordinated. No control of his limbs at all!
Now DS1 is really good at sport and Ds2 isn't very good at all! Infact I was the mum cheering madly at only chid left in the race at sports day

Yorky · 04/11/2007 20:38

DS sat at 4months, befre the rest of my antenatal group kids, but stayed just sitting for ages while they got moving - rolling and some crawling. He now crawls at 9months and cruises round the furniture, but he can only move to his right! I have no idea how that works!
