Good afternoon fellow mumsnetters!

My almost 2 year old is yet to start talking. My advice from health visitor is that it's common and not to worry too much at this stage, but what I am worried about is his development with learning colours, counting etc etc.
He doesn't point to things as he's just not into it. You can show him a picture of a cow a thousand times and he'll never point it out if you ask him where it is.
So if I did that with colours etc he wouldn't be interested. I count ever time we go upstairs and when we're playing with blocks etc but where he's not talking I have no idea if he's learning it.

Any fellow late talking mummies have my advice?

Will he suddenly start talking one day and say all the colours and numbers? Or will it be a case of teaching him it when he can be a&&ed to say stuff?

Thank you

Does he do anything to communicate that he wants something eg pointing/signing? Do you have any indication he understands what you're saying eg will he follow instructions? A baby not talking at 2 isn't a massive concern necessarily but a baby showing you no sign that he understands anything or has any joint attention with you I'd say is a concern x

Colours and counting etc can come later. Either way I'd say your soul focus right now should just be on joint attention and speech. A website called www.teachmetotalk.com is fab for explaining principles and ways to encourage speech xx

Yes he definitely understands us and points to things like his cup when he wants a drink etc.
Ask him to get a nappy out the draw and he'll do it and lots of other things. I'm not worried about him understanding, he tries to talk but it's just gobbled and sing song noises.

That's good and reassuring then to a degree. Take a look at the website. I would just keep talking about colours and numbers in his play. He isn't really expected to use them for another year or so. If he gets it then you're just reenforcing the ideas which isn't a bad thing and if he doesn't get it yet then you'll just be one step closer to teaching him. My dd wasn't super speedy to talk and now at almost 3 amazes me with some of the things she's learned that I wasn't aware she had learned. He'll probably catch up and surprise you at some point. I would say if by 2.5 he's not saying a lot I'd insist on further investigation as the older he gets the harder it might be to catch up. And if you haven't I'd get his hearing tested now xx
