Worried about "Baby Brain Drain"!

Just read an interesting article by Dr. Miriam Stoppard in Times 2 saying that educational baby DVDs are bad for my baby's brain development. i got given a set of baby einstein dvds when Bea was 6m and i stick them on from time to time. She watches them but I don't like to leave her too long without coming and watching them with her. I'm now quite worried i've done her a disservice - although we do spend plenty of time talking and singing together which Dr. S says is really important so hopefully its not done any damage. Has anyone else read this? take a look and see what you think

I read the article today. I think she means not use the DVDs as a replacement for human interaction. They aren't damaging, just not proven to increase IQ or whatever other claims are made. IMO if the alternative would be a baby left crying while you go to the loo, cook etc then it's better to give them something entertaining - but with no expectation that that time will have been educational.

I read the University of Wasington article referred to by MS - it compared a) babies who watched non-educational kids' tv (eg Spongebob), b) ones who watched 'educational' kids' tv (eg Sesame St), c) ones who watched normal adult tv and d) ones who watched Baby Einstein stuff - turned out that in terms of vocabulary the only one with any advantages was adult tv...

ah, here it is

but I wouldn't worry, Higgy

really, MrsB? becuae there have been previous studies which showed a big disadvantage to watching adults telly.

SenoraPostrophe · 01/11/2007 19:31

ah, no, it found no effect from watching adult telly.

MrsBadger · 01/11/2007 19:33

ah, sorry, that should have been 'no significant disadvantage'
