Hoe far do you expect your toddler to walk?

My dd is 33MO. She's good physically but I'm finding she isn't getting tonnes of exercise right now because of the weather etc. It's hard to play too much in the park and she's not too keen as it's cold and wet. She will walk in the woods etc but often whines quite early on and I'm afraid I'm only small and just don't have the strength to carry a 16kg kid for long distances so I do just make her walk a bit. I've stopped taking her stroller as she will jusy pester to go in it. I just wondered how long your kid this age will typically walk? I don't want to push her but want to grow up getting plenty of exercise etc as well. Thanks x

I've not really carried DS much since he turned 3- he's 18kg plus and now 3y7mo He can walk a mile or so without complaint and at a push the other week, walked 3 miles but it did take us 2 hours (there was some stubbornness there).

But we have dogs to walk whatever the weather and if DH isn't WFH, he doesn't have much choice

Oh and we got rid of the buggy soon after he was 3 as not napping any more and didn't take it anywhere else (hadn't been used in months by then!)

Thanks. We haven't used the buggy for a few months either tbh. I have to say we walked at least a mile round the woods earlier maybe closer to 2 and no complaints whatsoever and she was STILL full of energy to go to the park lol. I think I'm going to start expecting her to do this a bit more now that she's a bit older

2Y11M can walk 3+km, to a hill, up the hill then down again and home, with a break for playing on the play equipment that's on the side of the hill. She does this walk a few times a week. Trained gradually with jelly beans for just getting a bit further each time. Now she does it no problem. As long as she is cheerful and not hungry or in a whiny mood.

All children are different - maybe she just doesn’t enjoy the walking part?

My now 9 year old used to complain about having to walk longer than 10 minutes when he was younger. We were still bringing his buggy at age 4.

Could you let her go in the buggy to the park and then bring a ball and let her have fun running around with you so she gets some exercise?

Hi there I think all children are different and I've noticed some love/hate the buggy. My son is 2y4m and is in that annoying phase of hating bring strapped in the buggy but either running away if we let him walk without holding hands or walking for a little while and then whining for a carry but refusing the buggy!

Generally speaking if it's just a walk to somewhere boring like a shop or around town he can manage about half hour before he gets moany. When we've been somewhere more exciting for him like the woods he's been able to cope with about an hour before his legs get tired

At 30 months we would walk a mile to the park, spend a bit of time at the park and walk a mile back. I’ll have to admit with the weather being as it is and being stuck to the local area we have only had shortish walks recently
