Hi mum's

Please could someone explain to me in lehmanns terms what repititve speech is? I've read things but still a little confused and whether it fits my sons speech patterns?

Thanks for any replies

I think it's aka echolalia which is repeating phrases or words and not really using them in true conversation or even just saying it to themselves. It might be something they've heard someone say or a line from a tv show. Eg occasionally my daughter says 'just like a pillow' (a line from Frozen) and giggles to herself. It's different from a phrase they learned but are using in context eg my daughter also says 'I told you a hundred times don't do that' when I annoy her, a phrase which she may have learned from me BlushGrin

I think most kids will use at least some repetitive speech but the concern comes if their speech is exclusively this and they're not actually capable of having a conversation.

A bit of

Ignore the 'a bit of' at the end of that. Pressed send too early lol

Thanks @jannt86 that sounds fairly similar to my son.... He comes up with loads of spontaneous speech but also uses sentences that he's learnt from us and also phrases but all appropriate.... For example... When doing a puzzle and we find the right piece he'll say "that's a great idea... Put it here" or he'll say the same phrase when he wants to play with me and then says "that's a great idea... Let's play this"......... He'll also say "daddy you cheeky monkey" if I'm being silly or verbally playful with him... I just wondered if this was repetitive speech as we do hear lots of similar sentences throughout a day but lots of spontaneous speech aswell....... sounds fairly similar unless you or anyone else thinks otherwise?

I am glad you asked, your situation sounds similar to what I went through a few years ago. The repetitive speech called echolalia is a stage of speech development. If it lasts longer than a certain age, you should seek help. Please know that echolalia can be used for speech generation and that there are two types of language learners. Read more here

Get yourself involved, don't give up. Good luck.
