Sudden Toe Walk and Other Development Issues!

Hello all,
My DD is 15 months 14 days, and always been very playful and active baby. She has maintained average weight (50-60%), however, always been a picky eater. She prefers feeding herself with finger foods.

Recently, I watched a video of a child with ASD. Since then I have been visiting sites on ASD signs.

I noticed some of the signs in her. I don't know if these are normal or not.

My DD has been super (hyper may be!) active since she started walking (around 10months). She is always on the go and climbs on anything she can (chairs/desks). Even now she is desperate to climb the fridge and radiators. Very little attention to toys or anything these days. Loves mirror, books (would bring to me). Responds most of the time to her name, however, slow when watching TV or busy with something.

She is unable to point to anything with index finger. Whenever she wants anything, she would try to reach for it. Sometimes brings that to me (for example shaking juice pouch). She does say few words (example duck, dress, cake). I have noticed some unusual hand movement occasionally.

Few weeks ago, I have noticed she is toe walking all the time, except running. I have never seen her do that before. When shoes are put on, her feet stays down most of the time.

Her tantrums have increased, if anything is done against her will (nappy change, dressing up, taking her out from bathroom etc). Hates to go in the car/car seat (it has been a problem since she turned one).

She is also not shy to strangers or other people.

There are few more signs, I am bit concerned about. Everything seems not normal since I watched that video and read about ASD. Her one year assessment was done over the phone around 14months.

I am very distressed. Any experience would be helpful. I guess earlier interventions are necessary, if ASD is present. Sad

I would not worry at the moment as everything you described is age appropriate at 15M old, all very much normal. Distal index finger pointing would not be considered late until after 18M.

Don't panic they all go through phases like climbing and regress now and again. I totally understand how anxious it makes you feel when you suspect something, I would certainly give it a few more months then reassess and note down any concerns and speak to your HV if still issues. They change so much at this age ( I have an 13 month old and a 4 year old now!)!

Try modelling pointing more and see if she copies. My DS was late to point, wave & clap I realised I had never really demonstrated it. I started to point to things a lot to show him. Originally when I read a book I'd say look duck and then I changed to pointing to the actual thing on the page I was talking about and saying duck.

Ps I think toys are just a marketing thing to get us parents to spend money. Both mine loved/ love playing with anything apart from their toys. They would find things in the kitchen drawers like spoons or pegs, get out the pans, cardboard boxes, water, plant spray, keys.
