Anyone else got a 'Compulsively Creative' child?!

DD (5.5) is compulsively creative. She is driven to make things from first thing in the morning until last thing at night. She starts off cutting and sticking before breakfast, takes a break to go to school, and then needs a lot of persuading to stop to go to bed at night. She's been like this since she was about 3, although she needed more help then - she once had me making a bikini for Pingu at 6.30am.

Not being in the least bit creative myself I find it hard to understand her creative urges. I think she takes after DH who is very creative, and is also always making things. I'm pleased she's so creative but it's the compulsive bit that concerns me slightly - the house is bursting at the seams with her creations.

Has anyone else had any experience of this? And if so where will it end.

You've just made me so happy - I thought my DD (3.5 yr) was just slightly strange how she loved to cut any and all bits of paper and card up and then glue it back together on another peice of paper and then decorate it - we have also made absolutely everything (practically!) made on Tikkabilla! She loves it all - she'll sit for hours drawing, cutting and glueing. But from what I see it will last for a long time - but you've given me great Christmas present ideas for her!!

How could I forget when dd did pottery for a whole year as an after school activity?

I have a box of painted and glazed wonky cups and all manner of flowers and animals, including a whole stable complete with horses

What she lacked in skill she made up for by being prolific

Fashion designing? We have books and books full of her drawings.

She wants to be a model, a fashion designer and a teacher in that order

I may have a solution to the clearing up problem. DD likes to give a running commentary on her creations too. But recently she watched 'Mary Poppins', and for days afterwards she was prancing about the house muttering to herself in a brisk, jolly voice and Putting Things Away!

Mary Poppins you say.

Be worth seeing if that works on 3yo boy.

Especially one who likes to lie on sofa waving hand at mess saying 'oh you can clear that up mummy'

Apologies if this has already been posted. Do all you folks with creative kids know about Scrapstores? You can get LOADS of weird stuff for next to nothing, and it's good for the environment, as it's all stuff that would otherwise be thrown away.

Examples from my local one, paper and card offcuts (from bookbinders), fabric, leather offcuts, sticky labels for discontinued products - e.g. Fruit Salad tin labels, all manner of odd bits of tubing, bags, boxes and bits. As I member, I get a huge bag full for a pound (non members 2 pounds).

Stick Scrapstore and the name of your nearest largeish town in to Google to find your local.

That's a great idea.

I think (imagines house becoming an even greater tip)

Just wanteed to say how jealous I am of all of you!! I have two boys of 6 and 3. I home school and my 6 year old is not crafty at all - never has been. I stare longingly at all the wonderful project stuff we could make but he is not having a bar of it! Can I borrow one of yours for a while??

ArmadilloDaMan · 03/11/2007 16:11

Sadly I cannot direct ds's creative energies - I have learnt my lesson

Just chuck em in front of pile of stuff and leave them to it - no directions.
