14 month old walking a few steps, but not standing on their own

My 14 month old can walk quite a few steps unaided but it still unsure. They have been pulling themselves up and cruising for ages. But seems very cautious about just going for it, he hasn't yet learnt to stand on his own, although he did do it in a carpeted area at the other day. I am getting really frustrated over the cautiousness and slow progress...sometimes he does very well and can walk a good few metres. Then at other times prefers to crawl or walks on his knees. It is really frustrating that he seems to be on the way and then just stops. Has anyone else had this problem? Anything I can do?

My toddler was at that stage at 14 months and it took a good while before he was confident on his feet. There were a good few weeks between his first steps to walking across a shop floor and then even longer before he stopped crawling. All the while friends with younger babies were up and about and it had me feeling a bit concerned. But they are all different and go at their own pace. Sounds like he is making good progress and before you know it he will be off :)

He sounds just like my 14 month old ds was until a few days ago! It seems something has now clicked and he is suddenly walking very steadily, even carrying things and is choosing walking over crawling/cruising at least half the time! He is still yet to stand up independently of furniture, although I have seen him crouch down mid walk, stand up again and continue walking so he is clearly capable of doing it. I wonder if it just hasn't occurred to him to do it as he is always relatively close to furniture due to lockdown? I think what helped him get his balance was me sitting cross legged on the floor about a foot away facing the sofa and sitting him on my lap. He had the confidence to stand himself up without using his hands from that position as he could catch the sofa if he started to fall forwards. Then I gradually moved backwards so he had to get his balance himself before walking to the sofa. Now all he has to do is do it from the ground! I'm sure one day it will just click for your ds too!
