Hi just wondering how my almost 3yo should be understand Xmas. He's 3 in March. I'll start by saying he's speech delayed although he does say some stuff and he's currently undergoing SALT. A few friends have said their children of a similar age understand Santa was coming etc but I don't know if my boy does. It's hard to say cos Of the language issues. He does seem to understand instructions and will do what he's asked etc. Just wondering what other ppl thought

Also merry Xmas everyone

It depends on many factors like how many Xmas stories and programmes he's watched/listened to, whether or not he has older siblings or nursery fueling the Santa message and how far the parents go preparing for Santa's arrival. Some kids will have been to a grotto and seen/have a photo of Santa too.

Santa is low key here so my kids didn't get excited about it until they were at pre-school and watched programmes where Santa left gifts. (So older than 3)

He didn't watch anything about Santa, we're not massively into Xmas films so we spoke about it to him but that's all. Santa came to nursery and left gifts but not sure if the kids met him. I'll check that when he goes back. He's the older child

How has he enjoyed Christmas this year - today? I think that is significant. He will know it has been a special day, called 'Christmas'.

@jessstan1 hard to say where he's joy saying much but he deffo knew it was different and enjoyed his new toys

I think it all depends how much you talked about it and stuff. Mine's the same age and talked a.lot about Santa coming etc but I talked about it a lot and sung christmas songs etc a LOT to her. She was still quite overwhelmed when we met Santa and when she came down xmas morning to all her gifts etc. I think that's comepletely age appropriate. I think you have to go by what his speech and understanding in general are like rather than his understanding of one holiday x

I think next year will be different then when other kids start getting hyped up around Oct/Nov when they see Xmas ads etc

Important thing is that he is buoyed himself Smile

My lad is also 3 in March and has speech delay (no therapy yet as they are taking forever). He doesn't say many words at all

I've talked about Xmas a bit and read a few books... Also did the mince pie and milk for santa.... And a carrot for redolph. I've played a few Xmas short TV episodes and we've met santa.

I think he understood a few bits and that santa gave the gifts (though we didn't give him all the credit lol)

@Hitchyhero it's the OP here just name changed. Just wondered how your little boy is getting on with his speech now?

Mine is singing lots. Lots more words but says then randomly. Copies words a lot but u can't have a proper conversation with him yet. He talks away in his own gibberish a lot too. Paedtrician says he shows autistic traits

Hitchyhero · 24/07/2021 23:05

@shapes1 he has come on massively. Its only happened in the last month or two... But he has started to say words clearer and is combining about 3 or 4 words now. I still think he's behind some of his peers but he's catching up fast... And I'm not as half as worried as I used to be.

He had next to no help from the speech therapist though. They did assess him and recommended me one activity to do but havnt contacted me since.

shapes1 · 25/07/2021 07:31

@Hitchyhero that's great he's doing so well. I wish my don would talk a bit more but when the Paedtrician spoke about autism he also said he has a social communication delay so he's not socially talking as he doesn't need to
