Pupils different sizes

I have just noticed my 8 week old daughter has pupils that are slightly different sizes and now I am really worried.
They get smaller when the light shines on them, but she is still not great at following objects.
Should I be really worried?
I will mention it at the 8 week check but still not had a letter through for it yet.
Thank you for any help.

What letter are you waiting for?

Ilovesweets123 · 24/12/2020 22:56

The letter for her 8 week check at the doctors xx

Thanks. I really wouldn't worry about it too much. We all have something's that are a little different. I'd mention it at the check with the GP and they may refer you to the Eye Clinic but they may just adopt the normal approach with new Mums of "wait and see what happens".

I went to hospital with a head injury last year and the doctors were worried as my pupils were different sizes (apparently that can be a sign of serious concussion) though I felt fine, one doctor suggested checking photos on my phone, turns out they have always been uneven it's just never been noticed before.
I'd say get it checked out if you are concerned, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Can you post a picture OP? Do either of her eyelids look droopy at all, was she a normal birth? Has it always been there, or did it appear suddenly?

Anisocoria is actually quite common in people of all ages, but it sometimes needs investigating. I would definitely ask the doctor when you have your check up.

Thank you for all your replies. I am so worried that she can't see :(
Her eyelids don't look droopy. Both pupils do go smaller in the light, but I feel like the bigger pupil will randomly go slightly bigger.
I have tried taking so many photos but as her eyes are so dark, and my camera is rubbish, I can't get a clear photo x

Babies also don't have great vision generally. It doesn't usually reach adult levels until age 5-6.
Can she follow something (like a large pencil topper) about 50cm away from her face?
I would definitely follow it up with your doctor in the new year.

Ilovesweets123 · 27/12/2020 20:45

Thank you. I will definitely speak to the doctor about it. She can follow toys with her eyes when about 30cm away... so I guess that is a really good sign.
Really really hope everything is ok.

Hello. I’m experiencing exactly this with my 5 week old DD atm. I know this is an old thread but wondering how it all turned out for you?

Ilovesweets123 · 15/04/2023 11:38

Hello, we had a check up at about 4 months and everything is absolutely fine!! She is now 2 and a half (can't believe how quick time has gone!!) And she can see fine!! I can't even tell now, and if it is different sizes you can't tell. I am guessing it is noticeable as their eyes are so big in comparison to their face when they are tiny!! Still get it checked to be sure but hopefully that reassures you :)

@Ilovesweets123 thank you so much for the update this is very reassuring! I’m a natural worrier so trying to rein my brain in atm!
do you mind me asking did the difference in sizes come and go or was it there all the time? I think in my DD it was quite pronounced the first day I noticed it but haven’t actually seen it since. Would you say your DD’s was as pronounced as mine?

Aww she is so cute! No worries at all, I was (and still am) the same!! I would probably say it was quite similar to your daughters! It was more obvious in dim light... in bright light it was quite similar.
One thing that you could do is shine a torch near her eyes abd see if both her pupils constrict and dilate when in dim light.... that way you know her eye muscles are working properly :)

@Ilovesweets123 it’s so strange because not only do they both react to light but it hasn’t happened again since Wednesday evening. And I am regularly examining her eyes now! It’s so reassuring to hear that you think it looks similar to your DD too though!
