Ok ... so DS1 has gone completely mad for math

DS1 has been complaining that he's not doing v well at math (maths, whatever ) at school. So on Sunday I bought a couple of Carol Vorderman DK maths workbooks.

He finished the first one today, has been working flat out on it, completely bloody obsessed. He doesn't want to do anything else, he has to do it first thing in the morning, etc etc etc. He spent some time today at Frances' house drilling her DS on maths.

Do I just let him? I bought more of the books, since he's enjoying them so much, and my instinct is to go with it, but I'm getting a bit alarmed by the obsession. These workbooks are 32 pages long, and he did nearly all of it in 2 days.

congrats to your lad NQC, have you thought of showing his teacher?

GarrottedbyElasticband · 23/10/2007 22:47

is he always obsessive?
i am about sudoko.
if he enjoys it can't see any harm.

mobileslostisitinthefreeze · 23/10/2007 22:54

I used to be that obsessive about math, I was never any good at anything apart from math. Leave him to enjoy it.

We'll probably show his teacher when he's back at school, if he wants to. (He has a two-week half term.)

He is normally obsessive, but it's normally been top trumps or transformers or something like that. He's only 6, so I guess this is the first thing he can do and be obsessive about.

He has decided his next birthday party will be a math birthday party. Thankfully it's nearly a year away ...

He doesn't seem to have any worrying obsessiveness to me, at all

he did loads of other things yesterday in between shouting MATH-MATIGS

I bet the novelty will wear off but it didn't seem scary or odd when he was here, he was just very keen

we had a lovely time btw, please come again soon

glad you got back ok although sorry it was so late

i loved maths at this age and used to do maths workbooks for fun. i did maths a-level but didn't take it further. tbh i still quite enjoy sums! but i just do low-level stuff like sudoku and working out knitting patterns. looking forward to when dd is old enough for me to help her with maths homework.

by the way i turned out fairly normal (whatever that means)! although was thought of as a freak at the time

tissy · 24/10/2007 08:51

, my dd who is nearly 6, has a similar obsession at the moment- she punctuates everything she says with sums, so:

" Mum, can I have beans on toast for tea?"

"Yes you can"

"What's 1000 add 6"

"1006"

"Correct!"

(She thinks she's giving me really hard sums, as one of the numbers is in the thousands, the other is always less than 10!)

I hope it will pass, it's somewhat irritating!
