One other consideration in choosing an instrument... can your child pitch a note?

If not, then I would think violin would be absolutely awful! My DD still can't sing in tune so I was pleased that opportunity to learn flute came up and not strings!

Air guitar?

Recorder is a great starting point. You learn to read music, play in time, play with other people and (later) play in tune.

You do all this very cheaply while you think about what other instrument you want to learn.

You listen to loads of music, see what instruments you like the sound of, then try them - in shops and at children's concerts and the County Council 'Try an instrument' day.

Then when you start another instrument you can already read music and play in time with other people, thanks to the recorder.

Worked for me. Can't recommend it enough.

Thanks for the reply EmsMum. I used to play clarinet (got Grade 6, but am tone deaf and pretty talentless, so gave up at that point)and dd has done a bit of recorder already. May look into flute maybe when she's 8.

my dd started with the recorder in yr one, then went on to the fife in yr 3 in preparation for the flute which she started in yr 4.
She's in yr 11 now and on gr 7 and still really enjoying it.

I'm going to buy a second recorder so her and ds yrR can have a go together.

Definately the recorder is a great instrument to start with.

Quattrocento · 24/10/2007 00:37

Piano. Don't buy the no room argument. Good place to start. Recorder's a cul-de-sac IME.

Oh and this:

In the nicest possible way of course

who's humiliated you? Confused

WotzOut · 24/10/2007 09:37

Doodledootoo you OK?
Did you post late on the wrong thread. Doesn't make sense.

EmsMum · 24/10/2007 11:29

I think that would be a reference to Quattrocentro's link (which doesn't work for me) to Eats Shoots and Leaves. A small dig at mis-apostrophization in the title which had till then passed mercifully unnoticed, one presumes. QC, you will note, doesn't always even bother to form valid sentences.

nappyaddict · 24/10/2007 12:39

oh i assume she meant to link to this

i'm sure quattro was only joking.
