Pillows- When do you introduce them? And why?

My 2.2 year old doesn't have a pillow. The only time I've put one in, his head never touched it! He can end up anywhere in his cot and doesn't stay still during the night.

Does he need a pillow? And how should I introduce one?

TIA

My kids all had them from 1 year. I think I read somewhere under one was not suitable for obvious reasons of getting stuck under it once they can push it off there head should be ok. But I guess if he can do without its not such a bad thing, think I read somewhere else that everybody should ideally sleep without a pillow, better for the posture!! Maybe the pillow is too fat for him start of with a thinner one until he gets used to it.

I gave DD a thin pillow just before her second birthday. Until then she would move up and down the cot and often end up lying across it. She would also never keep the covers on.

Since I introduced her 'special' pillow she goes to sleep with her head on it and stays in that position all night, with the covers on!

DS (2.4) hasn't got one yet and sounds exactly the same as yours PPants. Don't know when to introduce one but think I'll leave a bit longer - seems a bit pointless if he won't actually be on it for very long. I was wondering about gettin one when he moved from a cot to the bed. He is in a cotbed at the moment and there is loads of room so it won't be for a while.

I've just introduced pillow to my 17month old ds. He had a restless week last week and no one got much sleep. Introduced a cot pillow (conincidental or not) he is now going through the night again and he seems much calmer and settled in his cot. God bless that little pillow.

About a year ago DS1, then 2.5, announced one bed time "need to get a piyyow!" Went and got one himself, and has slept with one ever since...

Elasticbandstand · 21/10/2007 21:24

i think i too read about it being bad for posture.
with my 3rd i left it for her to ask, can't remember other two. i thinkwe stayed with relatives who provided them and they cottoned on.

presumabely you have one (or two)

Same as Tuttiefruitee, my dd is 18 mth and just had a restless few weeks...popped in a pillow with bambi on and a eeyore duvet and she asks to go to bed now! Otherwise would have just waited until she was into proper bedcovers...still in sleeping bag...ontop of duvet!

If he is not bothered then I wouldn't worry. He may well ask for one if he sees other children have one in the bed.

I have a wriggler of a son, I keep his pillow in place by wrapping it inside a sheet.

He is 17 months now and is still in a cotbed. I use flat cotbed sheet, lay it lengthways on the floor in front of me and I kneel on the floor so that my knees are facing the side of the sheet.

I lay the pillow in the same orientation (lengthways) and wrap the side of the sheet in front of my knees over the pillow so it is level with the top of the pillow. I pull the next side down over the pillow towards my knees so that it is toghtly wrapped round like a pillow case would be but I have long ends to either side of the pillow. These long ends I tuck under the matress and it anchors the pillow in place.

I also put the pillow so that the raw edge of the sheet is at the top of the cot so he can't tuck his hands in under the pillow. (I hope this makes sense)

DD just started using one because she had a cough and its stayed - she's 2.8

wheelybug · 21/10/2007 21:51

the pillow, not the cough luckily

Jas · 21/10/2007 21:53

I put one on the dds beds when they moved into a big bed at 2.5ish so I had something to lean on when I read the bedtime story
DD2 is 7 and still doesn't use hers.

I'd definitely wait til he asks.

PanicPants · 22/10/2007 14:46

Thank you everyone. I'll wait and see if he asks for one. He's still in his cotbed as well.

Bless him, he'll still be there when he's 10 - and without a pillow
