15 month old singing 'twinkle twinkle little star'...

pitch perfectly, in babble, but nevertheless completely in tune. She's dd2, so not PFB(!) is this normal? I can't remember at all from dd1, and she doesn't know many toddlers her own age to compare too...

Really curious if this is peculiar or just standard!

CarGirl · 20/10/2007 19:59

she could have "perfect pitch" not normal IME

Marne · 20/10/2007 19:59

Dd1 was singing at that age but dd2 (18 months) does'nt talk or sing

colditz · 20/10/2007 20:00

I know a child who did, but it's not average.

It must have sounded really cute - you really should try to record it if she does it again! As CarGirl says she could have "perfect pitch" - and it's not very common in speakers of languages like English as opposed to Chinese which relies on tones changing the meaning. Apparently it's possible for everyone to develop it very early in language development (I only discovered that when I went looking for statistics as to what % have perfect pitch later in life, but couldn't find anything definitive):

When she's older you can even do a test online to see if she has perfect pitch:

flamingtoaster, she does it all the bloody time! Non stop, morning til night (especially when her sister is trying to sleep and first thing in the morning...) We're trying to teach her a different song cause we're all so sick of twinkle twinkle...

Sounds impressive to me. And cute

dd2 is blowing down a recorder (her sister's) and bouncing with pleasure at 10 months - her sister only learnt to blow on command at about 2 years: guess they vary a lot!

Elibean · 20/10/2007 20:47

'on command' used very loosely - not given to ordering babies to do things

beautifulgirls · 20/10/2007 20:49

Our DD#2 does this too! She has finally added Happy Birthday, baa baa black sheep and Row row row your boat to the list in the past few months. She would have been about that age when she started doing it. Thankfully she is also developing more words in it now too but it is quite hearing babble interspersed with clear words! DD#1 totally different and only just starting to sing at all and nowhere near in tune - cute but painful!!!
Enjoy your daughter - she sounds like a lot of fun.

splishsplosh · 20/10/2007 20:55

my dd did twinkle at that age too... I used to sing it to send her to sleep, so not surprising it was her first tune I guess. At first I thought maybe it was me being all over proud and optimistic mum, but her grandma commented on it after dd saw her, and I'd not told her beforehand. Now at just turned 21 months, she can sing at least 10 songs, with varying clarity of words - twinkle is perfect other than think it is like a tiger in the sky! and wind the bobbin up is totally perfect. I'm expecting them all on x factor in 13 years!

yurt1 · 20/10/2007 20:56

ds1 did it at 15 months too. I have a recording of him. He's 8 now and still has perfect pitch apparently.

I wouldn't say it was normal though.

littleducks · 20/10/2007 21:09

dd does baa baa black sheep all in 'baa' with some head nodding for yes sir she also asks me to sing her 'dock' (hickory dickory)

marymoocow · 20/10/2007 21:16

dd did it too, and then ds2 but like everyone else, never met another that did! Strangely enough my mum heard a little one doing it in a shop yesterday and commented to me that she had forgotten how my dc had done it. dd used to always sing herself to sleep.
She's now in the school choir if that's any help

EachPeachPearMum · 20/10/2007 23:09

Dd did this from 13 months, and baa baa too- though no words, tune only.
She didn't crawl till 15 months though or speak until 20.
They all develop differently

christywhisty · 20/10/2007 23:15

My DD 10 used to sing at that age. She has a lovely voice now, but has gone all shy and won't sing for anyone

kidsrus · 20/10/2007 23:23

my dd did this too and she made a diamond with her fingers.
now she is 21mths she goes on to sing old macdonald. words are clearer now.
she also loves singing meiow meow la la la la la!

BurpyErnie · 20/10/2007 23:26

my dd (19 months) does Joleane and We Will Rock You. Her sisters are Karoke champions... Oh to have twinkle little star... BLiss.

That said the singing in tune at such a young age is unusual. X Factor here she comes!

Blu · 20/10/2007 23:51

How sweet!

When Ds was 15 months we were driving in Spain and saw a big hoarding for McD's . I said "oh no, MacDonalds!" and a little voice from the back, clear as crystal, went "ee ai ee ai oh!" in perfect tune.

amytheearwaxbanisher · 21/10/2007 00:08

mine certainly wasnt singing never mind in tune at that age

chipmonkeyPumpkinNorks · 21/10/2007 00:20

ds2 could sing the Barney song in tune at 11 months. No words but pitch perfect.

flamingtoaster · 21/10/2007 10:32

babblington -I'm sure she'll pick up another song pretty quickly, she is obviously going to be musical. She must really enjoy singing or she wouldn't do it so much!

Kiwinyc · 22/10/2007 12:15

Dd1 sang Twinkle Twinkle word perfect and in tune at 16mos before she was talking or saying any other words. Dh's side of the family are musical and were v. excited by this but sadly this musical ability has deserted her at age 4 and she can still sing but raucously and completely out of tune... Dd2 at the same age has only babble, no singing, no words just raspberries!

babybore · 22/10/2007 12:27

My 15 month old hums twinkle twinkle and ba ba black sheep but only the first few lines. i wouldn't call it pitch perfect but I understand the song. rec you've got a very musical kid!

Interestingly the humming has coincided with starting to speak a bit - 'ball', 'bee' 'eye' etc.
