Delayed speech my fault

I'm sure my son is speech delayed cos of me. He's 2.5 and has a handful of words. He can say "go" in response to ready steady and he tries to say flower, bye bye, bubbles and a few other words. Not entirely clear but said in context.

He understands very well. He has been in nursery since September this year and they say he is doing really well and joins in when he wasn't when he first started. I referred us to SALT and we've had about 3 sessions now and they visited him at nursery recently and reported back to me that it's really helping him.

However I do feel it's my fault as I really didn't speak much to him when he was younger. He also doesn't massively share stuff he's interested in with me which we are working on. I tended to do everything for him so now we are working on letting him communicate his needs to us by pointing or pulling or something like that.

I guess I just worry that when he starts school at 4.5 that as much as we are helping now he might not have caught up?

Oh really don't worry about something that very likely will not happen in two years time.

If it helps any, my DD didn't really talk until she was 3 and so had only been talking for a year when she started school. It didn't hold her back at all.

I'd trust in Salt and if you want a few extra tips, have a look at the ICAN website Smile

You sounds like you are doing lots now ❤️. If you search MN, you’ll find lots of stories about toddlers with very few words suddenly making huge leaps. Just keep doing what you’re doing!
