It's not often I worry - but DD's lack of weight bearing is starting to concern me

DD is 13 months and still isn't properly weight bearing...I tend not to worry in general - she was late in rolling over, crawling etc and I was the same as a baby apparently.
It's just lately a couple of people have mentioned the fact she rarley bears weight and doesn't/can't pull herself to standing.
Now it has started to gnaw away at the back of my mind and I feel a bit guilty that I haven't been concerned and there could be something wrong....so...anyone out there had similar and can put my mind at rest???

Sorry for the ramble - when I'm worried I drone on

Try not to worry just because a couple of people have mentioned it. All babies develop at their own rate.
Mine was a big and heavy baby at 13m and could just about pull herself up but nowhere near walking, also late in rolling over, crawling etc. Whereas my nephew was boney and light but he had so much energy and could walk by 10m .. they're all different

Thanks

That's what I've been thinking but as DD is my first have started to think 'what if something is obviously not right and I haven't spotted it'

That's what I was hoping for, others telling me they had the same and there was no problem

My dd1 couldn't pull up to standing by 12 months. I think she did it for the first time at 13 months, and took her first steps at 17 months. She didn't bear ANY weight until 8 months, and crawled at 11 months.

And she's fine!

Has she ever pulled up to standing? Is she trying/getting there?

She's probably just a bit late with gross motor skills. Have you noticed that she's particularly good with talking/fine motor skills/something else? It can seem to be that they develop one skill THEN another.

HTH.

My ds doesn't do this either, at 11months. He is a very big baby too.

iwouldgoouttonight · 19/10/2007 21:45

My DS is 14 months and has just started pulling himself up to standing in the last week or so. I know how you feel - I was worrying about it too because DS was late crawling and rolling over and it seemed as though everyone else's babies were off and walking by about 9 months! My DS is still very wobbly on his feet and can't stand without holding on with two hands, but having seen how he's gone from not being able to move around at all, to rolling, crawling and pulling himself up in the space of a couple of weeks, I've now realised they all get there in the end! My DS is quite chunky and I've also noticed a lot of the babies who walk early seem to be quite slight in build.

Now that I can see his physical development progressing I've started to worry he's not speaking well enough - I think we're destined to have to find something to worry about (well I am anyway!)!

Thanks for posts

Yes fine motor skills are good and she is talking well. Says quite a few words.
I really wasn't worried until recently. Think I'll relax again - I talked early and walked late - maybe she's taking after me

DD is quite chunky as well

I wouldn't worry for a couple of months, and then go to your GP/HV if she's not pulling up. She'll probably be walking by then anyway!

When did she first take any weight at all on her legs? Was it quite late?

mumofhelen · 19/10/2007 22:23

As a speech therapist said to me, "early walkers can be late talkers - and the reverse can be true too". In other words, early talkers can be late walkers. Sounds like your dd falls into the latter category. Talking at 13 months is great too. One of my nephews only began walking at 18 months, but he could sure talk a lot too at 18 months. At 2 years old he was speaking fluently and walking fine. My message to you is: don't worry. If she's not weight bearing at 18 months, then it's time to see the GP, but she's got plenty of time.

GibbonInABloodSoakedRibbon · 19/10/2007 22:38

Awww thanks guys - feel better already
She has been doing the same amount of weight bearing for a few months - very little and rarely puts feet down flat. I think I'll see how it goes and try not to stress.

Thanks again

I've had three like this. None rolled over, none crawled, or were even remotely mobile until 12 months+. The older two couldn't even get into a sitting position by themselves until 12 months. If you held them up in a weight-bearing position, they'd hold their legs out in front of them like little plastic dollies, even at 15 months +.

They all bum-shuffled and walked late: 18 months, 20 months and 19 months iirc.

All normal now, dd1 at secondary school, ds in Y4 and a champion cricketer, dd2 just started primary and a demon climber.

Unless you notice other issues like generally poor muscle tone, there's unlikely to be a problem. Age of walking is highly heritable, so particularly if you were late in weight-bearing /walking, it's probably just how she is.

Elibean · 20/10/2007 20:49

dd1 didn't stand up until 14 months, her best pal didn't stand up until about 16 months. dd2 is still on tip toes and not standing at 11 months, and I'm not remotely surprised!

I bet she'll be fine

LittleMissLate · 25/10/2007 14:57

Pleased to see this post as my dd is 10.5 mths and not bearing any weight on her feet when held upright and showing no interest in crawling either (she is quite skinny 91st centile for length, 25th for weight so it isn't that she's too heavy). She gets around by rolling towards whatever she is interested in. Wondering at what point I should get worried so its good to see that I'm not the only one with a late developer!
