HV just lifted baby from flat to see extent of head lag - my LO had always had a wobbly head which he cant support well

so when she lifted LO from flat his head just dropped right backwards and he couldnt pull it up...awful to see..all contorted - ope it didnt harm his head and neck - poor thing!!

does yours do this to? or is my Lo very behind?

HV not worried but did say he was behind!

worried

"HV not worried"

That is the important thing. HVs see so many babies, I am sure if there was a problem she would have told you so and referred you to a paed. If YOU are worried then speak to your GP. I know it is horrible when your LO doesn't seem to do the same as other babies their age, but the vast majority of them catch up.

Theclosetpagan · 16/10/2007 18:38

bumbly - I'm a HV too and quite honestly I would never ever lift a baby up like this. I cannot understand why your HV did this. What does she mean that he's behind?

She won't have done any damage by checking head lag but I'm more annoyed on your behalf that she seems to have left you worried.

Quite honestly to say she's not worried but that your little one is behind is not good.

What is she like usually?

Can you see your GP and ask him/her for advice

LIZS · 16/10/2007 18:38

Did you ask your HV to explain or say that it makes you feel anxious when she says such things. tbh it was probably an off th ecuff remark, if she were that worried she'd have referred you. A lot of babies can't overcome gravity in that sort of position. Many don't lift their heads from lying horizontal face down until 4 months plus.

LIZS · 16/10/2007 18:44

The more I think about it the more I'd be inclined to say phone her up tomorrow and ask what she meant by her remark , telling her how it has made you very concerned, possibly completely unnecessarily

thanks so much for replies - was concerned nobody was replying to my posts

thanks tons

i am an nice person honest but just very down today after hv visit so was getting paranoid nobody replying here on mumsnet

yup she checked for head lag alright and basically said was worried but also not worried...she said not worried but will ask someone else's opinion...i thought hv saw kids all the time???

in answer to everyone - hv never ever gives a def answer...so am not pleased at all

my LO def has head lag awful from lying flat and being pulled upright

but also my LO cant lift head up 45 degrees when lying face down

however my LO seems to punch for things ok

(sorry for typos not english)

ps to clarify the test she did was pull to sit....

lo also wont lift head when lying on tummy

12 1/2 weeks old

Their heads are still so heavy relative to their muscle strength at that age, so such a test isn't very meaningful imho.

bumbly · 16/10/2007 20:44

thanks feel reassured

but yes HV did say he is "behind" and that was that....

ds2 (13 weeks tomorrow) does hold his head in line with his body when lifted

but ds1 took much longer

i've just checked my 'what to expect...' book and it doesn't mention it as a 'thing to expect' til 4mo
